Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Kajumba.

Rebecca Kajumba

Hi Rebecca, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am the maker and owner of The Kawa Shop. I make colorful and unique pillar candles, incense and other home goods. Little bit about me, I was born and raised in Uganda and moved to California when I was 17. I have always had my hands in different creative fields but finally found my niche and love in candles! I officially started my business, “The Kawa Shop” in 2020. The word ”Kawa” is Ugandan slang for “ok”. It’s a sort of mantra for me that everything is ok and if it’s not now, everything will be ok. Everything is kawa. My products are created to bring joy and make your space feel more peaceful. You light a candle or an incense stick and create a space to relax and unwind. Most of my candles are scented but can also be unscented if requested. Thank you for this opportunity to share my story. I hope you enjoy The Kawa Shop goods.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting a business isn’t easy, especially during the pandemic. The pandemic birthed so many small businesses because so many people used the difficult time to pivot their interests and seek other sources of income. It’s definitely been a wild ride trying to find a niche in the market since it was so saturated. I tried different waxes, wicks and vessels to help me stand out from the crowd but finally found my passion in pillar candles using funky shapes and molds.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make candles, hand dip incense and other home goods. I specialize in fun-shaped and scented candles made from paraffin wax. These candles come in a wide range of shapes like mushrooms, flowers, rainbows and other fun abstract shapes. I’m most proud of my Halloween collection. Fall is every Chandler’s favorite season and Halloween is mine. Skulls, Teeth, ghost candles and even spine candles to create the perfect spooky atmosphere, not to mention they all smell divine.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I really want my goods to create a space for stillness and calm, to add color and joy to people’s homes.
