Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Ishida.
Hi Rebecca, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist, mom and comedienne, not necessarily in that order. I went to Beverly Hills High School, and in my mind, I always knew I’d be an actress or a therapist. There was no doubt I’d be a mom. When I graduated from high school, I attended UCSB and majored in psychology. After graduation, I gave the acting thing a try and waited tables. I did lots of stand-up comedy and auditioning, but I didn’t get to the point where I was a working actress. I went back to school and got my master’s in clinical psychology at Pepperdine University. Upon graduation, I worked at a variety of settings. I’m now in private practice, where I work with kids, adults, and couples. I specialize in addictions, trauma, and high-conflict couples.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s not a smooth road, but that is life. I was married for 16 years and have two kids. I was a single, full-time mom of two since my kids were in 11 and 13. It wasn’t easy, but it was also wonderful. My greatest accomplishment is being a mom and raising two amazing, emotionally intelligent children.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I bring humor into my work as a therapist. I also continue to do standup comedy around Los Angeles at great places like the Comedy Store and the Icehouse in Pasadena. I think I’m a very relatable therapist which allows me to better understand my clients!
How do you think about luck?
I was very lucky to have parents that paid for my education. That enabled me to get the degrees that I have. Beyond that, I don’t think much about luck. I think life can be very cruel and unfair but also beautiful and joyful. I also think life can be random, so I’m grateful for all the goodness I have and hope to maintain it with hard work and strong effort.
