Conversations with Rebecca Coy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Coy.

Hi Rebecca, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Dance has always been a passion of mine, grew up taking hip-hop and jazz classes. As I got older, I got out of dance classes and proceeded to be a go-go dancer for clubs and events. I grew up in the UK but moved to the United States nearly 10 years ago. When I moved out to the states, I didn’t know anybody and my dancing took a step back, but it was always in my heart. A few years later I ended up taking dance classes, hip hop and heels classes. And automatically fell in love with my passion again. So I continued to grow and realized that I really wanted to teach my own choreography and give my passion and love of dance to others.

So I did my research on studios and what I needed. I found a studio to rent in San Diego. I promoted myself mainly on Instagram and word of mouth that I’m teaching my very first heels dance class! I had a fantastic turnout, and it felt so good. I remember I cried when I got home from class that night because I felt like this is what I should have been doing all along. You should always follow your dreams, even if you feel you are not good enough, you have to keep pushing for what you want.

Now I have been teaching for a year and a half. I now teach at two different locations. Tuesday’s my original home base (Ledbetter Studio, San Diego) and now have added a Wednesday night in Imperial Beach area.

I love what I do. It empowers us woman to gain confidence. Dance is so much more than just dance. Heels class brings out the sexy in all of us. I am able to provide a safe place for all the girls that walk through that door and build a community of love.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Getting a consistent amount of people to show up each week was hard starting out. Sometimes I only had a few sign-ups. I think it’s important to be consistent as a business and continue with the people that did come along, eventually over time, I grew. But it wasn’t smooth, it took a lot to just not give up!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

I also provide opportunities to be in dance concept video shoots. Where we use professional videographers to film us.

I get a group of dancers together to practice and rehearse a specific group choreography, it’s a work of art, and it’s a great feeling to see yourself dancing in a professionally shot video that the dancers can share and hold onto. Not only fun but learning how to be filmed. Creating bonds between dancers and strength in growth.

Any big plans?
At this time I will continue teaching weekly classes, maybe adding more time slots.
