Conversations with Raul Sebastian Ramos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Raul Sebastian Ramos.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I dropped out of high school at 15 without a clear plan, but I knew one thing: I was going to work, and I was going to learn a trade. At the time, I dreamed of becoming a tattoo artist—but I quickly realized I couldn’t draw to save my life. Still, the idea of painting on skin stuck with me, and that eventually led me to hair. I fell in love with the idea of transforming people through color.

I enrolled in beauty school not long after and hustled hard—attending every Saturday, clocking as many hours as I could as a full-time student. I graduated early and became a licensed cosmetologist by the age of 16.

My first job was at a salon in the mall, and I skipped the traditional assistant route. I knew I needed to learn by doing—even if that meant making mistakes. That hands-on approach shaped the way I work. Not long after, I landed a position at a salon in Beverly Hills, where I got my first real taste of working with high-end clientele. That experience helped define my path—I knew I wanted to work at a luxury level.

By 20, I took a leap and moved to Florida, somewhere I’d never lived and had zero clientele. I managed to secure dual licenses in both California and Florida, and started building from scratch. I worked at an Aveda salon where I sharpened my skills and grew as a stylist. Eventually, I opened my own salon suite and quickly built a loyal following—bringing West Coast hair to the East Coast and getting recognized for it.

But something was still missing. I’ve always had a passion for sharing what I know, so I leaned into education. I started by teaching keratin treatments for a brand I believed in, and soon after, I set my sights on color education. I put the intention out there, and not long after, I was training with Keune. I became a color educator, flying around the country teaching other stylists and loving every second of it.

After the pandemic, in 2021, I felt like my time in Florida had run its course. I moved back to California and—starting over in my 30s—took a year off to reset and reconnect with myself. That break reminded me of what I really love: creating, connecting, and being behind the chair.

Now, almost four years later, I’m fully back in the game—working between Silver Lake and West Hollywood—and more grounded in my purpose than ever. I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being homeless at one point, getting into trouble with the law making dumb choices and losing it all. Then moving back to California with 100 dollars to my name.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
