Conversations with Rachel Alig

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Alig.

Hi Rachel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been working full-time as a professional actor based out of Los Angeles for twelve years now. I can hardly believe it’s been that long. I was born and raised in Kentucky, so when I took the leap of faith to pursue my acting career in California it was quite terrifying. I didn’t know a single person in LA and I left a steady career as a news anchor. So, I actually did have a lot to lose. But it was definitely the best decision of my life.

When I first started as an actor, I was auditioning for student films and doing free work, but gradually, I started booking roles more and more, and eventually, I found myself making a living as an actor. It’s literally a dream come true. When I was about 8 years old I told my mom that I wanted to be an actress, and being the incredibly supportive mother that she is, she helped me as much as she could out of Northern Kentucky. I took acting classes in Cincinnati, Ohio, and got an agent. That’s when the giant acting bug bit me and my passion hasn’t lessened since.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
In the twelve years that I have been acting professionally, I have had some incredible experiences, but some major disappointments as well. In the entertainment industry, there is no formula for success; A + B does not necessarily = C. There is no clear-cut path on how to continue working as an actor, but I do everything in my power. If I’m not on set filming, then I’m auditioning; If I’m not auditioning, then I’m in class; If I’m not in class, I’m helping colleagues and friends rehearse and audition.

That’s what I can control. I commit to some form of acting every day. In twelve years, I’ve had amazing opportunities to create with delightful people in Paris, France, Chicago, Nevada, Texas, and more. My successes have come with pitfalls. I booked the leading role in a large film and was recast three days before filming, I’ve been told, ‘no’ by many agents and managers, I was shortlisted for a series regular on a streaming show on two separate occasions and was then passed on. Even with those heartaches, the beauty of creating for a living allows me to continue the pursuit.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As an actor, I’ve been fortunate to perform in many medians and varying genres. I’ve done comedic streaming shows, I’ve starred in dark, dramatic films, and I’ve created hilarious commercial ads. My ability to navigate each genre and form has allowed me to stay extremely busy for over a decade. I was blessed to work with the world-renowned artist, Paul McCarthy, for over four years making experimental films.

Working with Paul, his son Damon, and all of those involved has definitely been the highlight of my career. Paul deeply influenced me as a person and as an artist. Because of the work, I did with him, I’m able to dive into much more demanding roles. The time I spent with him was the best acting class I could have ever taken.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
The entertainment industry is definitely a relationship-driven business. I don’t mean this in a negative way though.

Referrals are very powerful within our industry.

Plus, when you find fellow creators who are smart, kind, skilled, and professional you want to keep them in your circle. It’s important to have a safe environment in which to create and those around you influence that deeply.
