Today we’d like to introduce you to Priti Chowdhury

Hi Priti, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We bought this property about 7 years ago, it was Elton John’s first home in LA. He even wrote a song about the house under the Hollywood sign. A couple years a go we decided to start an agave farm, we currently have 6000 agave plants with the intent to have 12000 soon. We have Espadin, Blue Webber and agave Americana varieties. We will have our first harvest in about 3 years and have our Mulholland Estate luxury agave spirit. Mezcal and Tequila made outside of Mexico can only be called Agave Spirit. Since it will be a few years we also are starting to grow Microgeens for Restaurants and straight to consumers. Being a scientist and after much research we have found microgreens to be amazing. Ounce per ounce they have up to 40% more nutrients than the vegetable they grow to become.

We love this property and are trying to make the most of it. It’s me, my partner Jules and our son Julian.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The slopes of our mountain have been difficult and the terrain is rough. At first the three of us planted all the plants on our mountain but now with our son in college we have help now and then. While agave are low maintenance plants they do need some care and our biggest problem has been gophers eating them from below and all of a sudden our plants were falling over. We had to replant around a thousand plants in metal mesh baskets or lose all of them! Weeds are another problem as we are constantly weeding. We are city people and as first time farmers we are learning a lot as we go,

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Our farm specializes in Farming Agave for Luxury Craft Agave Spirit and Microgeens. As I said, we are learning as we go and loving every minute of it! Agave Spirit grown in America is a new idea and we are excited to be one of the first.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
We Love LA! We are from Chicago and as much as we love Chicago, LA has become our home. We have made some good friends that have become family and can see ourselves retiring here on our farm.
