Hi Phoenix, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Belton, TX a small town in Central Texas about an hour north of Austin. I picked up a camera my freshman year of high school and combined it with my love of fitness. This opened up the door to make videos for brands and travel around the U.S and Internationally. It was during this time I fell in love with Southern California. One month after my high school graduation I made the move. I stayed on an air mattress in a friend’s spare office until I was able to get my own place. I was able to make a living working full-time as a freelance videographer. It has now been my job for five years.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe every business-minded person/creative has their own unique struggles. Up to this point, I’ve had lots of “failures” and bumps along the road. But as cliche, as it sounds I do believe every “failure” is a learning lesson. But my journey is still happening and you never know what the next day will bring.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Over the years I’ve been able to dial in my craft and learn that my love is really in storytelling. My outlet for that just so happens to be video. These are sometimes referred to as “feature stories” but it’s all basically a form of Documentary work. I love any piece where I’m able to give a deeper look into my subject or subjects. I love a great fantasy or sci-fi book/movie. But there’s something very special to me about telling an individual’s journey and path. Because it’s REAL. Life is gonna happen and I can’t control every single factor of the story. I do get to control how it’s presented. You could give two different artists the same canvas and subject but get two very different results. I enjoy doc work because It gives me an opportunity to connect with the subject on a deep level. If the internet and social media were to be destroyed tomorrow I would STILL have those connections. As an artist in any medium, I think the goal is to make what you want, with who you want, when you want. All while being paid to do it. I’m not there yet. I still do commercial work and branded videos for social media. But luckily clients have seen my love for storytelling and I’ve received more client work in my realm of interest.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
My most recent endeavour in storytelling has been a YouTube channel called “The Artist Connection” this is an outlet for me to tell stories on my own terms. Mostly about tattoo artists and the tattoo culture as that has become a subject I’ve grown extremely attached to in the past few years. Watching any of those videos would be amazing and If you feel compelled leaving a like and subscribing. That always helps.
