Conversations with Owen Nathanael

Today we’d like to introduce you to Owen Nathanael.

Hi Owen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have been intrigued by music and filmmaking since I was a little kid. Until I was around 15 years old, I knew media scoring was something I could try to do. It all started with my self-directed, self-acted, and self-composed movies, and now, I was fortunate enough to score award-winning films, chart-topping podcasts, and popular advertisements.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course, it has been a challenging road. I started out figuring things out alone, and while some might argue that learning anything is more accessible now, it is tough for me to self-assess my work. Finding work is another challenge altogether. I have been in the loop with music friends but not with storytellers. While my first projects are valuable experiences, it is rarely paid and only help me gain traction in the industry.

The most significant change came when I pursued my education here in the US. With the aid of the scholarship that Berklee College of Music gave me, it opened the path to where I am right now in Los Angeles, home of the largest entertainment industry.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Why does the media need music in the first place? Music consumption has become more accessible to everyone. Music is everywhere, whether going to a concert, dining inside a restaurant, watching a sports game, or scrolling through social media. We are accustomed to having music, and when we don’t have music in media, it can be a jarring experience.

Tailoring music to media is another crucial aspect. When done right, music can transport the audiences into the world of the story they’re consuming. My motto is music maker, sound explorer, and storyteller, and I strive to create music that realizes the goal of a story.

I am fortunate to work with people from different backgrounds, each with a unique and personal story. I would ask questions and relate to them as best as possible. If the character has musical ability, what would they play? What would they want to say through music? It is a challenge since I would need to put myself in anyone’s shoes at any moment. Still, the result is always a rewarding experience for the people I work with and myself.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I want to give credit to all creators. The world is much more vibrant, with unique works inspiring others. I would not be here in this stage of my life if it weren’t for artists that inspire me, friends who keep creating things together, and creators who trusted me to become a part of their stories.
