Today we’d like to introduce you to Owen Marcus.
Hi Owen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
There was a point when I discovered the overwhelming tension pervading my existence, and it was clear—it was shaping my life, and not for the better! This revelation propelled me on an unexpected journey, an expedition of self-discovery and transformation. Initially, I delved into somatic therapies, seeking to mend the disconnect, eventually broadening my horizon, aiming to connect with other men to fortify my romantic liaisons.
In these sanctuaries of the masculine congregation, it dawned on me—I was far from alone in this struggle of emotional and somatic disconnection. Being a part of such supportive and non-judgmental groups was like unlocking a hidden door to expressing my buried feelings and enhancing my relationships in every aspect.
I formed the inaugural group in 1995 within the friendly confines of my integrated medical clinic in Scottsdale, AZ. It became the beacon that guided me and many others to explore our needs and longings. Inspired by my learnings, I constructed a new, more impactful model. Little did I know my modest group in Sandpoint, ID, would burgeon into EVRYMAN.
Now, EVRYMAN is not just a convergence point—it’s a dynamic live and online platform, a training powerhouse, fostering emotional intelligence in men and enabling them to thrive in all relationships. We offer an oasis for men and organizations, teaching them to manage stress and form genuine connections.
Today, we are recognized as a primary source of guidance for men seeking to acquire untaught skills to explore uncharted territories of their emotional and relational well-being.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I began my academic journey grappling with unforeseen companions: dyslexia and Asperger’s Syndrome. These were challenges I only came to recognize later, leaving me initially perplexed by the distinctive hurdles they posed. Unaware of the roots of my struggles, I became resolved to navigate and overcome, aspiring to thrive despite my circumstances.
Upon reaching high school, I had managed to carve out my niche. I may not have been an academic prodigy, but I had cultivated meaningful friendships and secured a spot in a reputable college. Post-college travels unveiled another layer of challenge—forging genuine connections with my peers. However, this adversity bore its own silver lining. Being the epitome of emotional detachment, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and healing, which ultimately paved the way for aiding other men in their own journeys of emotional/rational development and connection.
My postgraduate studies were an exploration of the pioneers behind the emergent somatic therapies of the 1970s and 80s. These trailblazers did more than facilitate my transformation; they bestowed upon me principles and skills that were conspicuously absent from conventional academic curricula. Mirroring the experiences of many with dyslexia, my strategies and adaptations proved to surpass the efficacy of the conventional methods, enabling not only personal growth but also the enhancement of my approach to helping others.
Each challenge, each unique struggle, served as stepping stones, forging a path of learning, empathy, and innovative thinking, bringing to light the latent potential inherent in unconventional perspectives and diverse experiences. The journey, marked by relentless pursuit and resilient spirit, became a beacon for those aspiring to transcend their limitations and redefine their destinies.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Over the years, both my approach and that of EVRYMAN have been rooted in a science-based understanding of emotional and physiological growth. The success of this model over decades underscores its transformative power.
I often see myself more as an artisan than a conventional businessman. It’s about harnessing what’s naturally present and sculpting a novel method. While challenging, opposing the conventional norms is immensely fulfilling. There’s a deep satisfaction when others embrace this fresh perspective, not merely for its novelty but because it genuinely offers better results. This grassroots adoption fuels an organic momentum.
I take immense pride in having remained steadfast to my vision. Today, it’s gratifying to see others benefit from it, using the approach to uplift themselves and those they cherish.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I vividly remember the distinct scenes from the seasons at my grandparents’ house in Vermont. Each visit was a harmonious blend of connection, amusement, and the great outdoors. Whether we were skiing through the pristine snows of winter or embarking on refreshing summer hikes, our lives seemed invariably intertwined with the natural world around us.
The delightful aroma and taste of my grandmother’s homemade chocolate pies also linger in my mind. She would lovingly craft them especially for me, adding an extra layer of warmth and sweetness to our gatherings.
Vermont was more than just a location; it was my sanctuary, a place where memories were crafted and eternal bonds were forged. The serene landscapes and familial love shaped an environment that felt profoundly sacred and comforting, a refuge from the tumultuous world outside.
