Today we’d like to introduce you to Norberto Perez.
Hi Norberto, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a freelance illustrator and painter based in New York City. Most of my work has a strong focus on the human figure. My love for painting began in high school when I began taking classes at The Art Students League of New York. Inspired by what is possible with painting I now seek to create beautiful solutions pictorially to any assignment thrown my way.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life is full of struggles and obstacles but that’s what helps us break through to more growth. That is something I’ve learned through painting. Every picture I make has its many challenges, some more than others. If the struggles are left without being resolved the picture will not reach its intended purpose.
Self-doubt is another obstacle constantly present with every illustration. During and after the process of completing an image, I doubt my ability and if I composed the best solution visually. To this, I always look back to my desire to pursue art in the first place and remind myself that it is an infinite chase to what I think is perfection. That unfulfilling feeling is what keeps the excitement for the next picture.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I do a variety of things, from painting from life to illustrating fiction. My Images are created using traditional materials in order to have spontaneity in my mark-making that I enjoy seeing. I continue to paint and draw from life, which is one of my greatest assets built over the years. I think of Illustration as setting up a stage with characters and a setting. The way I orchestrate my picture is unique to my experiences as an artist and the story being told.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Painting makes me happy. Although at times it can be frustrating, painting makes a day exciting with its frustrations and feelings of fulfillment. Going outdoors and painting with friends are some of the happiest moments I can recall.
