Conversations with Nomé Naku

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nomé Naku.

Nomé Naku

Nomé, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started singing from a young age and then learned how to write songs when I was about nine. Through middle and high school I played flute and alto sax because I wanted to be involved in music somehow.

During high school, I was trying to figure out what I was interested in pursuing and it always came back to music and writing songs. I decided to study music in college and that is where I learned how to produce my own music. This is when I really developed my sound. Now, I pride myself in my ability to build a song from the bottom up.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but I also think it’s practically impossible to have an easy drive when you’re pursuing music. Something I’ve struggled with along the way is confidence in what I do. I feel like it took me a while to show people the music I was creating. Once I changed my name to “Nomé Naku”, I felt like I could shamelessly share the things I’ve been up to. I really loved that.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m known for my cinematic/tribal/pop sound! I love layering tribal vocals and soaring melodies, over intense drums and synths. My biggest influences are Aurora, Grimes, and Muse. I really specialize in “pretty/etheral vocals”, and I’d like to think my production sets my music apart as well.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was kind of weirdo who had (and still has) a fantastic imagination. I was convinced magic and fairies were real. In my backyard, I had a treehouse that I would spend my entire summer in, making potions with food coloring. I also loved to draw and run around the forest. I grew up in Truckee, CA, so finding a forest wasn’t so hard.
