Conversations with Monique Singh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Singh.

Hi Monique, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Five years ago, I founded Monique Singh, my namesake luxury fashion label — a deeply personal vision brought to life through storytelling, couture craftsmanship, and cultural fusion. I am both the Founder and Designer, born and raised in the Netherlands, shaped by the richness of two worlds: Western modernity and the soulful heritage of the Indian diaspora.
Growing up between these cultural spheres, I was constantly seeking ways to express my identity. That journey inward became the foundation for Monique Singh. What began as a personal exploration soon evolved into my most powerful muse.

Fashion has always intrigued me — its ability to express, provoke, and empower without words.

After completing an MBA and pursuing Fashion Design at Central Saint Martins in London, I developed my skills in brand management and product design, including time at Gucci Beauty. But I found myself drawn to something more intimate and meaningful — sketching garments that fused traditional Indian elements with modern silhouettes. It began as a therapeutic outlet, evolved into a capsule collection and expanded into a full-fledged brand vision.

From the beginning, I knew I didn’t want to just create clothing — I wanted to create dialogue. Monique Singh is a brand that transforms heritage into wearable art, championing slow fashion and mindful luxury.
An integral part of my label is the commitment to ethics and sustainability — from design to production. Each piece is handcrafted in our atelier using innovative, ISO-certified or upcycled luxury fabrics, and brought to life by a team of artisans who specialize in draping, embroidery, and bespoke tailoring.

Today, Monique Singh is proudly available in the US, UK, Europe, and beginning to expand into the Middle East. I’ve had the honor of seeing our designs worn at the Oscars and Grammys, featured in publications like Harper’s Bazaar, Schön! Magazine, and ELLE, and showcased during London Fashion Week and Milan Design Week.

I want to keep pushing myself beyond the status quo. I’m currently working on a new creative venture that will add an exciting new dimension to the Monique Singh universe !

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Haha — absolutely not a smooth road! It’s been a path defined by perseverance, hard work, and plenty of moments of falling down and learning how to rise again, stronger and more self-aware.
One of the earliest and ongoing challenges has been building the right team — especially within the atelier. It’s not just about technical skill (though that’s essential); I need to work with artisans who deeply understand the purpose and poetry behind the Monique Singh brand. Translating a sketch into a wearable narrative takes both craftsmanship and shared vision. Finding people who resonate with both has taken time, patience, and trial.

The fashion industry itself is notoriously competitive. Gaining meaningful distribution, staying financially sustainable, and navigating the business side while protecting your creative core — those are challenges that constantly evolve. And then there’s the human element: building a support system of people who are genuine, aligned, and truly wish the brand well — that’s been a journey in itself.

But with every challenge, I’ve learned the importance of pausing to celebrate the wins — big and small. I’ve learned to lead with gratitude: for the collaborators who inspire me, for the clients who trust my work, and for the moments of clarity that follow failure. Growth doesn’t come from instant success. It’s built through the lessons that emerge when things don’t go as planned — and what you choose to do next.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Monique Singh, I create timeless fashion that merges bold femininity with cultural storytelling. Each piece is designed to be worn beyond the seasons — crafted to live in your wardrobe as a lasting source of confidence, beauty, and self-expression.

What I specialize in is intentional design: garments that empower women to own their presence. Every silhouette, texture, and detail is developed to make the wearer feel elevated — emotionally and aesthetically. Our collections blend elements from my Indian heritage with a contemporary Western edge, resulting in pieces that are elegant, expressive, and unapologetically powerful.

What sets Monique Singh apart is our mindful approach. Everything is handcrafted in our atelier by a small team of artisans, using innovative, sustainable fabrics or surplus materials from luxury houses. We embrace the art of slow fashion — focusing on quality, purpose, and emotional resonance over mass production. For my latest collection ECLIPSE I have incorporated advanced techniques like laser cutting to create a new level of tactility in the floral pattern of the dress.

I’m incredibly proud that our designs have been seen on international red carpets — from the Oscars to the Grammys — and featured in leading publications. But even more meaningful to me is the way women tell me they feel wearing a Monique Singh piece: seen, strong, and uniquely themselves.

At its core, Monique Singh is a love letter to identity — empowering women through timeless fashion that carries soul, strength, and story.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The fashion industry is undergoing a profound transformation — and I believe the next 5–10 years will be defined by a shift from fast, trend-driven consumption toward purpose-led design, craftsmanship, and transparency.

We’re already seeing consumers demand more: not just in terms of style, but in terms of story, sustainability, and ethics. The brands that will thrive are those that embed authenticity, accountability, and emotional resonance into everything they create. Fashion is becoming more about meaning than mass production.

I see a rising appreciation for timeless, trans-seasonal pieces that stand the test of time — both in quality and aesthetic. This aligns strongly with our philosophy at Monique Singh. People are moving away from overconsumption and instead investing in fewer, better pieces that empower and reflect their identity.

I also anticipate stronger integration of technology — from innovative, bio-based materials to digital customization tools — and greater emphasis on circularity, where garments are designed with their full life cycle in mind.

Finally, I believe diversity and cultural storytelling will take center stage in shaping fashion’s future. Consumers want to see themselves reflected in what they wear — in size, heritage, voice, and value. Designers who offer representation and foster meaningful connections will lead the way.

Monique Singh is here for the long run, creating consciously, crafting beautifully, and building a universe where fashion becomes a language of empowerment.
