Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Chatman.
Hi Monica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey started from a deeply personal place. A few years ago, I began experiencing anxiety and panic attack disorder. During one of my lowest points, I discovered that coloring helped me feel calm and grounded—it became a form of mindfulness that allowed me to breathe, slow down, and focus. But as I searched for coloring books that reflected people who looked like me and my children, I noticed a huge gap. Black men, women, and children were simply underrepresented in these spaces.
That’s when I created Positive Mindfulness Hub—a space dedicated to centering Black joy, beauty, and empowerment through coloring books. I began designing books that feature affirmations, natural hairstyles, family moments, and cultural pride. What started as a personal healing tool has now grown into a mission to help others, especially in the Black community, use coloring for mindfulness, self-love, and stress relief.
Today, I’m proud to say my books are reaching people across platforms like Amazon, Etsy, and TikTok. I’ve also connected with schools, parents, and mental health advocates who see the power in what I’m creating. This business isn’t just about coloring—it’s about visibility, representation, and healing.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but it’s been worth it. One of the biggest struggles has been balancing everything. I’m a wife, a mom of three, I work a full-time job, and I also care for family members. Starting and running a business on top of all that can be overwhelming, especially when resources are limited and time feels so stretched.
Another challenge was learning the business side of things. I didn’t come from a background in publishing or e-commerce, so figuring out platforms like Amazon KDP, Etsy, and Shopify took a lot of trial and error. There were moments of doubt, especially when sales were slow or tech issues popped up, but I kept going because I knew the why behind my work.
I also had to overcome personal challenges like managing my anxiety while building something new. But those struggles gave me even more reason to keep pushing. They reminded me that if I needed this kind of creative outlet for healing, others did too.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I create coloring books for Black men, women, and children through my business, Positive Mindfulness Hub. My work focuses on mindfulness, self-love, and representation. You’ll find everything from little Black boys dreaming big, to women rocking their natural hair and headwraps, to beautiful couples celebrating Black love. I try to pour love and intention into every page I create.
What I’m most proud of is how people connect with it. I’ve had parents, teachers, and even therapists tell me how much the books help. It’s a good feeling to know that something I created from a place of healing is now helping others heal, too.
What makes me different is that this isn’t just a business—it’s personal. I know what it feels like to be overwhelmed and need an outlet. My books are that peaceful space I didn’t always have, and now I get to share that with the world.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most about my city is the diversity. I am originally from Carson, CA; however, my family and I moved to the Valley 7 years ago. My city is a place where you see so many different cultures, stories, and styles. It’s inspiring.. There’s a sense that anything is possible here, and I love how people are always finding new ways to express themselves.
What do I like least? Honestly, the cost of living and how hard it can be to build something from the ground up. Sometimes it feels like you have to work twice as hard just to get half as far. But even with that, the energy and community here keep me motivated to keep going.
