Conversations with Mina Choi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mina Choi.

Hi Mina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I moved to California from Korea in 2012 pursuing masters degree in jazz studies at Cal state Fullerton and I fell in love with jazz music. Since then I have been playing, teaching, and making my career here.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not! Financial obstacles finishing up my degree, keeping my legal status, adapting myself in different culture, going through some personal stuff away from home.. oh yes, everything!!!!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Mina Choi is a Korean-born, Los Angeles-based jazz pianist, composer, and conductor whose music uniquely blends jazz, classical, and the rich traditions of her Korean heritage. With years of experience as both a performer and educator in California, Mina’s work reflects her personal journey, characterized by beautiful melodies, intricate rhythms, and colorful harmonies. Each composition tells a story, inviting listeners to experience a deep emotional connection to her music.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I believe music is a powerful voice and I have been expressing myself and sharing my stories through the music. I feel more comfortable to use this universal language connecting with other people. So, my music reflects my journey as a Korean immigrant, capturing themes of struggle, longing, and self-discovery.
