Conversations with Mikey Rotten

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikey Rotten.

Hi Mikey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Moved out to LA with 300$ to my name and no guaranteed place to go to pursue a career as a DJ producer and was kindly offered a place to stay by a friend’s friend for the first couple months of my new LA life. Moved into a lock out studio shortly after that while securing a position at ExchangeLA as a resident dj for there bass music nights through BassRush. After playing in every major club and living illegally in production studios, vans, and RVs I had partnered Eddy Baker of Seshhollowwaterboys and started to throw underground rap events. Around this same time, I put down the dj career and started as a rap artist and a whole new chapter began.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I spent almost three years living in vans, RVs, cars in lockout production studios and warehouses illegally. I’ve been extorted, jumped, harassed by police, kicked out of multiple spaces, and ripped off all on my journey to where I’m at now. But it’s the hard time that make the good times good. It’s the dynamics in life we experience that allow us to enjoy the little things.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Being driven by the punk rock DIY mentality and lifestyle, I tend to do most of my own work when it comes to my music career. I find myself playing the roles of rapper, producer, engineer, mixer/masterer as well as a visual artist and director/video editor. Being a low budget artist with no label or financial backing, I’ve had to acquire more skills than most to get to where I’m at today.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Don’t be a sheep, pave your own path and don’t take no for an answer!
