Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Visser & Tim Talavera.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In 2016, Imaginary Tricks start with a 5-song EP called “5 + 1”. Founder Mike Visser began writing and creating “Skommel” a 10-song record by looping in a Brooklyn basement. In 2017, I met Tim Talavera and began touring the US, only to find ourselves back in the studio as a duo in 2019 to record “Art Flakey” with Sam Cohen. Briefly after the release of “Art Flakey” the pandemic ended the prospect of touring, so we started writing material for a new record called “Watch It” after our then bassist Patrick Torres’ severe bike accident. At the request of doctors, Patrick was told to play bass in his recuperation back to health and began jamming with us to track a few tunes for “Watch It” before moving back to Sydney Australia with his kick-ass family. We most recently toured Los Angeles and Northern California in the summer of 22 and plan on being back on the West Coast summer of 2023 to promote our newest release.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Sometimes it’s been smooth and sometimes it’s not been smooth, but that’s just how life goes. Anytime we jam, perform, tour or record we’re pigs in shit.
If there was a down, it was how much we worried about our homie Pat’s life after his injury, hence the name “Watch It”.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Were all about jamming and exploring any music idea that is the most exciting at that moment. We enjoy playing and creating together whenever possible. Were honestly most proud of the musical connection that we have and working on what’s exciting. Our live performances are always met with listeners unable to categorize us.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
As an artist and musician, in order to pursue your craft, the risk is the reward. We’ve both been lifelong players and performers and plan on continuing till the ship sinks.
