Today we’d like to introduce you to Meyvi Wedelia Geeska.
Hi Meyvi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Jakarta, Indonesia. Back in high school, my art teacher pointed out my knack for art – that was the start of everything.
At 18, I left my hometown for Singapore, finished Visual Communication major in Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, got headhunted during my final year and landed my first gig at BBDO Singapore.
I disliked advertising in school. But I found myself swept into agency life. From the open-concept spaces, all the creative individuals, fun and wacky ideas during brainstorming to messy desks and what not. Inspired by my seniors, I asked a lot of questions and guidance to understand how to do good work in this field; I love that everyone has their own ways, perspectives and wisdom.
Eventually got referred by my senior Creative Director at BBDO for a better opportunity at DDB. There, I stepped into the role of handling regional and global accounts. Fast forward five years and the path led me to Toaster, Google’s in-house creative agency, where I continued to grow.
Currently, I am going indie with GUT agency. Working closely with the team seated globally across 8 countries. I love it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For young leaders, establishing authority can be one of the biggest challenges in managing older employees. But I would always focus on what needs to be done, show by examples, share your guidance and most importantly be open to learning from the team.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Creative Director in an Advertising agency. Clients (marketing team) come to us with business problems, our job is to combine strategy and creativity to solve that problems. Me and my team create campaigns for brands across various business sectors like Google, YouTube, Netflix, J&J and Unilever. My work is mainly for APAC market, and currently focusing on South Korea.
I specialise in digital-focused campaigns. My role is to steer the creative strategy, ideation and direction of projects from conceptual stage to production stage. Making sure they are the right balance of strategy, creativity, and effectiveness.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I think the most important thing in starting out a career is to find the right mentor. Doesn’t have to be one mentor. Find mentors, the good ones. This is more important than pursuing money, of course without dismissing it completely. You will get wisdom, lessons, doses of confidence, and opportunities laid out for you.
