Matheos, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I embarked on my journey from Brazil to the United States at the age of 19, driven by a singular dream of mastering English and immersing myself in American culture. Over five years, I tirelessly pursued language proficiency, discovering an unexpected passion for the tech industry along the way. The challenges were immense—I landed on American soil with no command of English, no support network, and a daunting path ahead.
To make ends meet with my limited English, I took on various jobs, from cleaning Airbnb houses to working as a driver and other similar roles. In a surprising turn of events, I even became a tennis coach, leveraging my limited knowledge of the sport. These diverse experiences, initially unrelated, formed the foundation of my resilience and determination.
While living in San Francisco, breaking into the tech industry marked a monumental achievement, underscoring my unwavering belief that dreams are attainable, especially considering that working in one of the biggest tech companies was a personal goal of mine at the time.
Even though working in technology was a goal of which I am proud, over the years, my trajectory evolved as I discovered a newfound passion. Sharing stories became my way of connecting with others, inspiring them, and contributing to a larger narrative. Along this journey, outside the tech industry and fueled by a desire to work as a writer, in 2022, one of my works was selected for production in the entertainment industry—a small project that marked a significant achievement. Stepping into the writers’ room and meeting creative individuals in the industry reaffirmed that I was indeed headed in the right direction. Recognizing that Los Angeles was likely the place I needed to move to after discovering this new dream added another layer of excitement to my evolving journey.
Transitioning to the entertainment industry marked a pivotal moment in my career. Today, I find myself working at one of the world’s largest talent agencies, navigating the intersection of storytelling and data-driven insights. This convergence not only defines my professional life but also fuels my ambition to craft narratives that resonate on a profound level.
In parallel, I am on the verge of launching a website where I plan to showcase real-life stories. It’s a tribute to the countless individuals whose journeys inspired me. I firmly believe in the power of authentic characters derived from genuine experiences, and I aim to integrate these characters into productions that capture the hearts of audiences.
As I navigate toward my dreams, I recognize the significance of the journey itself. Each setback, odd job, and unexpected twist has contributed to shaping my narrative. Dreams, I’ve realized, are not fixed points but constellations guiding us through an expansive universe of possibilities.
While my ultimate destination remains uncertain, I am committed to the perpetual pursuit of my aspirations. If you seek me, you’ll likely find me immersed in the creation of compelling stories that captivate and inspire. I wrote “The Possibility of Achieving a Dream,” where I outlined my goals and focuses at the time. It’s gratifying to observe that, despite having different goals now, my foundation remains unchanged, and I take great pride in that.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In response to the question of whether my journey was relatively smooth, I acknowledge that, like everyone, I faced unique challenges that significantly shaped my path.
Language Barrier: Upon my arrival in the U.S, mastering English from scratch proved to be a significant hurdle. The struggle to communicate effectively added an extra layer of difficulty to my journey. Overcoming this challenge required dedication and a relentless pursuit of language proficiency, laying the foundation for the subsequent phases of my adventure.
Lack of Support Network: The absence of a support system was a considerable challenge. Feeling adrift and not having guidance made navigating a new culture and pursuing my dreams more challenging. However, this void propelled me to build my own support network over time, learning to rely on my own resilience and determination.
Identity and Goals: In the very beginning, not being sure which path to take and sorting through various options added a layer of uncertainty. Figuring out my true aspirations amid the unknown was a crucial part of the challenges I faced early on. This phase of self-discovery became a defining moment, shaping the trajectory of my journey.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I seamlessly integrate storytelling with data-driven insights, actively managing data information by implementing robust practices and leveraging advanced technologies. Engaging in data management for the security of celebrities’ information not only hones my skills in safeguarding sensitive data but has also deepened my understanding of the entertainment industry’s intricacies. This unique perspective continually sparks fresh ideas and insights, enriching my writing with a nuanced understanding of people, stories, and the dynamic landscape in which they unfold.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck, both good and challenging, has played a significant role in my life and career. Navigating obstacles demanded a harmonious blend of tenacity and fortuitous opportunities. Breaking into the tech industry was marked by pivotal moments and the alignment of the right opportunities—a stroke of good luck that set the course for my professional trajectory. Transitioning to the entertainment industry brought a mix of positive breakthroughs and unexpected challenges, each molding my path in ways I couldn’t have predicted. Whether it was landing exciting projects or navigating unexpected hurdles, the entertainment realm introduced a new set of dynamics to my journey.
Of course, I am not mentioning the really hard times, like when I needed to drive for hours or, in the beginning, in the US, cleaning more than five houses a day while I was in school, just to make ends meet. As frustrating and stressful as it was, those experiences kept me moving forward. It’s a testament to the resilience within each of us—you’re often more capable of doing what you don’t want to do than what you desire. We are stronger than we think, and if there’s someone reading this, all I can say is, keep going! All we need is to believe in ourselves and plan out the next step. I am still working on my goals, and as I go, I want to bring everyone to also pursue their dreams and believe that it is all possible.
