Today we’d like to introduce you to Mason Ewing
Hi Mason, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello everyone! My name is Mason Ewing. I was born on April 9, 1982, in Douala, Cameroon, to a Cameroonian, Italian, Jewish mother and an American father. My parents were amazing people who gave me so much love. I always tell people that I am someone passionate, I love life, humanity, and I never forget to mention that I have kept a childlike soul. Since my mother Marie gave birth to me, she passed down quite a bit of heritage. I’m certain that my love for fashion comes from her. I’m sure she left me this legacy before she passed away in 1986. My mother Marie was a very beautiful woman. With her Cameroonian roots and Sicilian Italian background, she was very popular. In her lifetime, she was a model, stylist, fashion designer, and seamstress. My mother, Marie, loved to sew clothes for the children of the Pau Street neighborhood in Douala, Cameroon.
During all the years I experienced horrible things in my early childhood, only my dreams helped me hold on. I had four passions in the artistic world. The first one was fashion. I was really fascinated by all the magazines that talked about top models from that time like Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Karen Molder, Linda Evangelista, Kate Moss, and the beautiful Christy Turlington To me, all these women were stunning, they had everything to represent haute couture gowns from great designers. And while I was locked in a room, they made me dream. I made a promise to myself that when I grew up, I would become a fashion designer, first to honor my late mother Marie, and also because since my childhood, I loved to draw beautiful dresses, costumes, and more.
But there was one thing that really marked me: I was a fan of Marie-Antoinette. So, I drew a lot of Marie-Antoinette wedding dresses. It was my specialty. Then when I lived in Cameroon and my mother was still alive, half of my days were spent with her, watching her cut fabric and sew with the sounds of her sewing machine from that time. What I loved most when I was little was that I was my mother’s model. All the children’s clothes she sewed, I was the one who tried them on. I was her little model. There was an incredible bond between a mother and her son. And I also loved fashion, dressing well when I could. My second passion in the artistic world has always been my love for TV series, cinema, shows, and everything that comes with it. I’ve always loved movies, they allowed me to escape, to travel to another world that wasn’t accessible to me. And as I’ve always said, thanks to Steven Spielberg, Whoopi Goldberg, Meryl Streep, and others, it also gave me the desire to become what I am today: a producer, director, screenwriter, costume designer, and set designer. I find myself in all these passions. I never wanted to be an actor, it never appealed to me. Acting is for others! And I am proud to have started my own business in 2023 here in the United States, called Mason Ewing Corporation. Mason Ewing Corporation is a holding company with several divisions, including the audiovisual part. I created a production and distribution company called Ewing Power Production, which we also call EPP.
As for the third profession in art that is a great passion of mine, let’s say it’s my publishing house called Ewing Publication, a subsidiary of my holding company Mason Ewing Corporation. Why do I love books so much? Because at the time when I was deprived of everything, reading, writing, and drawing saved my life. Thanks to the books I secretly read, I could create imaginary characters who became my friends. For example, throughout my childhood, I always dreamed of one thing: having a best friend with whom I could share everything. Even though I never found one, I was lucky to have wonderful friends with me in the schools I attended all over the Seine-et-Marne region in France. Today, I am quite happy to write my own books and publish them in my publishing house. I released my autobiographical book called The Eyes of Destiny, which tells all the misfortunes I lived through during my childhood, my suffering, my pains, my loneliness. My dream is that one day my story will be adapted on a streaming platform like Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, or others. What I want with this TV mini-series about my life is that it can inspire other children and teenagers around the world, especially here in the United States.
For example, I am a person with a very childlike side. I love to dream. And for the past year, I’ve launched a collection within my publishing house called The Adventures of Eli Tilmann. This young 17-year-old boy named Eli is everything I would have liked to be when I was young. He resembles me when I went on adventures with my two best friends. And especially to have the chance to have a family, something that was missing from my childhood. When you are an orphan, it’s very complicated. If there’s one thing I know, it’s that everyone who embarks on reading Eli Tilmann will love it. The first book is called The Mystery of Athon Forrester. The second book, which I just released on December 31, 2024, is called The Secret of Madala Magic. It’s a book with over 400 pages where young Eli Tilmann will go on various investigations with his two friends, Logan Lost and Johnny Glanderwood. My greatest pride is that my godmother Eliza Roberts, a wonderful woman who supports me and believes in me, is by my side for this second book. In fact, Le secret des Madala Magic was prefaced by her husband Eric Roberts, the older brother of the famous actress Julia Roberts. Eric and Eliza are people who believe in me and have always supported me. I am thrilled that we will be working together for my film and TV series projects. By the way, her husband Eric Roberts will star in my next horror film called The Raven’s Circle. It’s amazing! But if people want to discover all our books, they shouldn’t hesitate to visit my publishing house Ewing Publication on this site: ewingpublication.com. I am sure they will love everything they see! Especially since there’s a huge universe with the adventures of Baby Madison, books for children.
As for my fourth passion, it’s music. That’s why in 2024, within Mason Ewing Corp, I decided to open a music division. So I opened the doors to a label called HoloTech Records, which will produce a lot of talented young artists. For example, thanks to my label HoloTech Records, I’ve already produced a French artist named Elouan Moroz who sang a children’s song called Souvenir de Guerre, created to pay tribute to American war veterans and a young disabled man named Loren Schauers. I also decided to produce my favorite artist, Baby Madison, the logo of my clothing brand Madison Color. Baby Madison just released his first song called Baby Love, Baby Love, and soon, another one called Rainbow Ballons, where he sings alone, and two others where he sings with the French artist Elouan Moroz. These will be called My Dad on the Phone and Three Wings, One Love. My greatest dream is for all our music to be broadcast soon on the radio and other platforms.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being in the artistic field, no, it’s not easy at all. Especially when you live in France and you’re Black and, on top of that, blind. For me, in France, it was very difficult. I was mentally harassed, persecuted, and many people tried to harm me by posting negative things about me online. The first time I announced that I wanted to work in the artistic field was in April 2001. I wanted to do fashion, and it surprised journalists, my friends, and my family. To be honest, no one believed me. Then one day in 2005, I had a great idea: to create a logo called Baby Madison that would fight for everything I had been through: the racism toward my skin color and the cruelty toward my disability. Baby Madison is an 11-month-old child full of hope. I wanted this baby to not look like everyone else. With its caramel-colored skin representing mixed skin tones, its blue, slanted eyes with a blonde lock of hair, everyone could identify with Baby Madison. Then, in September 2006, I did my very first fashion show and presented my first clothing brand called Madison Color, which featured classy, ready-to-wear sportswear where you could find my Baby Madison logo and braille.
Why did I want to include braille? Because it was very difficult for us, the blind, to dress. How do we know what color, size, or other features something has when we can’t see? That’s why, in Madison Color’s clothing line, there’s braille to indicate the activity Baby Madison is doing, the color, and the size of the garment. And what’s magnificent is that when I moved permanently to the United States in November 2023, I brought my friend Baby Madison with me because we had a fight to carry out here in Los Angeles and things to prove to the world. I assure you that when you’re in a country you don’t know very well, things aren’t easy, but I hung in there, fought, and eventually settled in well. By the way, right now, I’m preparing for my next fashion show for my luxury brand Mason Ewing Couture, which will showcase beautiful evening gowns, ball gowns, etc. Gowns worn by several celebrities. In fact, in June 2024, I dressed actress Calista Carradine, who is the daughter of actor David Carradine, for her wedding. It wasn’t me who made her wedding dress, but after her vows, she changed into a Mason Ewing Couture gown that fit her perfectly. I thank her for her trust. I plan to dress many more American celebrities over time. It’s true that the artistic world is not at all easy for the blind; it’s even very hard! We’re still put in twice as many obstacles when we have a disability. I know very well that it’s not easy for sighted people either, but I had to fight twice as hard. And when you’re blind and want to work in the sighted world, you always have to justify yourself.
There’s a question that always annoys me with everyone: “Mason, how do you draw when you’re blind?” So people expect one thing from me: that I have to justify myself, and I find that sad. I feel like a sideshow attraction. Actually, my fight is to show the whole world that even people with disabilities can do wonderful things. I know my fight will be long, but I have to succeed. I’m not worried, I just need to be determined and strong. As I often say, “Losing my sight was the best thing that ever happened to me.” I have no regrets, and if I had to go back, I would take the same path.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
To talk about my work and what I do exactly, first of all, I was elected the first blind stylist designer and film producer in the world, meaning I’ve managed to do things that many sighted people struggle to achieve. First of all, outside of being a public figure, I have many skills. As I mentioned earlier, fashion, audiovisual, book publishing, music production, I do 3D, so everything related to animated drawings, video games, and all sorts of merchandise connected to the Baby Madison universe, because my goal is that one day we open an amusement park around him with many games and attractions related to the city he comes from, Jonathanland. Baby Madison is from Jonathanland, a beautiful fictional city in California. We have several press magazines, and with Mason Ewing Corporation, we are involved in many divisions.
Why am I famous? Because I think that in this world, people aren’t used to seeing blind or disabled people capable of doing extraordinary things. I also have a special story with my childhood. As I often say, I’m a survivor, and I’ve been lucky to have many articles published about me all over the world, which is really amazing. Plus, I’m surrounded by many celebrities, both in France and here in the United States.
Regarding the things I’m proud of, I’ve already received several awards, like an award a few years ago in Pennsylvania when I was in France, and also a medal of honor. Since November 2024, here in the United States, I received an award in Los Angeles for my work in animation, thanks to a wonderful woman named Verane Jackie Deschamps who believes in my work. I thank both of her festivals France USA International Film Festival and Africa USA International Film Festival. When I was in France, in the first year I opened my publishing company Ewing Publication, thanks to several of my books like The Eyes of Destiny or the first volume of Baby Madison’s adventures called Madison goes to India, I managed to generate 60,000 euros in revenue, which was a huge source of pride for me. Especially since I sold over 37,000 copies of my autobiographical book The Eyes of Destiny in France.
For me, one very important thing is that all of our books that are released are also available in audio for blind people. One day, I also plan to translate all my books into braille. For now, any blind person who wants to read my books can find them as audiobooks. We are sold in over 20 countries, and especially, our books are in many languages like English, Spanish, and French.
What differentiates me from others is that my disability is not an obstacle for me, but rather a strength, and today, I am blind, but I have my eyes wide open, and I see the world as it is: magnificent.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
How people could collaborate with me? Well, it’s simple. With the logo of my brand Baby Madison, I am looking for big companies willing to license my logo because it has a lot of potential. For example, I would love to collaborate with brands like Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Hasbro, Walmart, etc. I want people not to be afraid to give me a chance. I feel like people are scared to support a disabled person. Any company interested in me can contact us either via my Instagram, which is mason_ewing_official, or on LinkedIn by searching for my name. They can also send us an email through our website, Masonewingcorp.com. What I also hope is that young people will go discover our universe with the publishing house Ewing Publication. I’m sure they will enjoy the adventures of Eli Tilmann, especially with the release of volume 2. And then they can read the books by the authors we have published, such as Baba Wild, Eric April, Zacharie Malek, and Louis Lopez. All these people are part of the Mason Ewing Corporation team.
Above all, I wanted to thank the personalities in Los Angeles who believe in me, like my godmother Eliza Roberts and her husband Eric, John Blythe Barrymore, who will appear in my horror movie, which is amazing, Calist Carradine, producer Greg Sims, producer Stephen Nemeth, and Oscar-winning producer Dale Belle, who is currently working with me on several film projects. He is also a mentor. These are people I am very proud to know. I also want to point out that if anyone has trouble contacting me, they can also reach out to my agent here in Los Angeles, Tina Contogenis.
As for my fashion show that I want to do this year, I have reached out to former supermodel Cindy Crawford to wear my wedding dress. I hope I can convince her. I’m also very happy that my friend Tony Selvage will compose most of the music for my films, series, fashion shows, and even a ballet I am preparing called Isabella and Dorian.
One small thing I can add is that I love America. This beautiful country saved me, and I am excited for the businesses in Los Angeles to contact us for collaboration, as Mason Ewing Corp is open to proposals.
