Conversations with Mary Serritella

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Serritella.

Hi Mary, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started to pole dance at age 57 after the last of my kids had graduated from college. A friend told me that her gym was offering pole so I had to try it. Of course, I couldn’t do anything but something about it was enticing. Since I did a little gymnastics in high school and am naturally flexible, that was a little something to build on. But pole takes so much more than that. The strength part, which is absolutely essential, I had to earn.

The gym didn’t keep the pole classes for more than a couple of months so I found new places to pole that seemed to be popping up out of no where at the time. I was fortunate to find a few places to learn and have fun.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I doubt that anyone can say that pole dancing is a smooth road because there is so much to learn and many opportunities to get injured (as in most sports/activities).

*Early on I accidentally flipped of the pole and sprained my knee, narrowly missing coming down on my head on a cement floor!
*Another time I went straight down on my head in Tucson where the poles were very dry and I wasn’t used to that.
*I ended up needing a total right hip replacement, probably because I was born with mild hip dysplasia but didn’t know it.

At this moment, that is what comes to mind but I may remember more later.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a mother of 3 and stepmom of one. That is where lots of creativity comes to fruition.

I love to sew my own clothes, costumes and have a small business of pole clothing that I design and make the patterns for.

I also make hand made chocolates at Christmas time…salted caramels and many other varieties. My dancer friends love to help cover them and package them with me.

I have two Standard Poodles (our 4th and 5th ones) that I train with a little help from a trainer. This takes thinking out of the box, much like raising children!

How do you think about luck?
I never think about luck….I think that I have been blessed in many ways but it’s more of how we perceive our world than anything else.
