Today we’d like to introduce you to Mario Rosales
Hi Mario , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up, I’ve always loved music! As a kid, my parents would always play songs from The Backstreet Boys to Michael Jackson, and even some Bee Gees. I didn’t understand it back then, but the smoothness and groove of their songs really gave me a calm yet energetic feeling. It really started from me singing along to
those songs during car rides that helped me realize I loved singing. Growing up with a Filipino mom, the moment she realized I had started singing, I had to perform for our friends and families at every occasion. I’m sure a lot of singers out there can relate to that! Though when I was younger I thought it was embarrassing, I believe those moments really helped me realize how seriously I wanted to take my voice. Once I started high school, I auditioned for chamber choir and spent the next few years learning as much as I could about how to improve vocally. Being a part of this group also came with a lot of opportunities to get on stage and perform. After graduating in 2016, I did my best to keep up with singing, while still developing my sound. At the time, I would also mess around with garage band on an iPad, but had no clue what I was doing. Fast forward to 2020 during quarantine, my close friend Jay Tran started learning how to produce on Ableton. He would teach me what he was learning over facetime. As I was learning, I knew that I seriously wanted to be an artist and produce my own music. I moved in with Jay and we started producing covers to post on SoundCloud. After my first year, I began officially releasing original music to all streaming platforms. Since then , I have continued to learn and grow as I experiment and release different styles of music, while always keeping in mind the smoothness of the music that inspired me in the first place !
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road at all, but it has been a very fun, inspiring, and fulfilling one! I’ve struggled with having confidence in the music I was putting out. I knew I loved the music I was creating, but I couldn’t help but wonder if other people would love it as much as I did. It took some time, but after continuously working on my sound and progressing my skills in production, I started loving the direction my music was going in. I think that began to overpower the lingering feelings I was having about my music. As long as I loved it and was happy with the way my projects were turning out, that’s all that mattered to me. I had taken a break from releasing music for a while, but with the new tracks that came along, I felt ready to start sharing what I had been working on! Finding that confidence in my sound has further driven me to want to be consistent with releasing music, while also experimenting with different styles!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I think I’m most proud of the friendships I’ve made along the way in my musical journey! I’ve been blessed to create friendships and work with some of the most talented individuals I have ever met. Not only have they believed in me, but they’ve helped me bring my music to a place where I can continue to experiment, have fun, and create from the heart, no matter what I’m going through. My music wouldn’t be going in the direction it is without all of them and their support, and I am so grateful to be able to create with these beautiful, amazing, and talented people!
They’ve seen the journey my sound has been on from the start, and how it’s evolved over the years. One thing my closest friends have tried to remind me of is my unique tone and tamber. That my voice doesn’t sound like any other artist, which helps bring an originality to my music. To be honest, even today I sometimes don’t understand what they mean. I guess it’s just harder to hear when I’m in my room tracking vocals by myself. Nonetheless, I give it my all to use my strengths to my advantage, trying to blend my vocals with the smooth production we experiment with. I think that’s what sets me apart from other artists. At the end of the day, I’m so proud of all the music we’ve worked on and have released!
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
To be completely honest, I think the pursuit to make a career out of music is already such a major risk to people, and I’d have to agree. If this is something I love and really want to do in my life, then I need to dive in head first and never look back. “Plan A” is for me to continue creating music, support myself and my loved ones, and have people hear my music all over the world! And “Plan B” ?… well there isn’t one haha! There’s only one outcome in this journey of music, and I believe you have to stay strong, be patient, and continue to believe in what you love and want to do. I wouldn’t be able to fully believe in the path I want to achieve with my craft if I kept thinking about “What am I going to do if this doesn’t work out?” Well you definitely wouldn’t reach those goals if you stopped, but just think of where you could be if you never gave up. I visualize the success of my music everyday, and I think as crazy as an artist sounds, choosing music as our only option is what will make the difference in the long run.
