Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Hughes.
Hi Maria, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Absolutely! My journey to becoming the Director of Marketing for the Pacific Design Center has been a rewarding and fulfilling one, shaped by diverse experiences and a passion for creativity and innovation. It all began over a decade ago when I embarked on my career in marketing at the San Francisco Design Center, where I served as the Marketing Manager. In this role, I had the opportunity of collaborating with designers, showrooms, and industry professionals to promote the center’s offerings and events. During my time there, I honed my skills in strategic marketing, event planning, and brand management, gaining invaluable insights into the unique needs and challenges of the design industry. As my career progressed, I sought out new opportunities to expand my horizons and deepen my expertise in marketing. When the opportunity arose to join the Pacific Design Center as Director of Marketing, I knew it was the perfect next step in my journey. In this role, I have the privilege of overseeing the marketing strategy and initiatives for one of the most prestigious design destinations in the world.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve been pretty lucky, but the struggle of being taken seriously as a young female is unfortunately all too common in many industries. Despite our qualifications, skills, and expertise, young women often face skepticism, doubt, and even discrimination based on our age and gender. This can manifest in various ways, from being overlooked for opportunities or promotions to having our ideas dismissed or attributed to others. I’ve learned that building a strong support network of mentors, allies, and peers can also provide invaluable guidance and encouragement along the way.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As the Marketing Director for the Pacific Design Center, I have the privilege of overseeing a vibrant hub of creativity and innovation. With over 80 meticulously curated interior design showrooms, PDC stands as a beacon of inspiration for designers and enthusiasts alike. Beyond our renowned showrooms, PDC serves as the backdrop for prestigious events such as the Oscars, Emmys, and Grammys, while our SilverScreen Theater in the Green building hosts exclusive screenings and premieres on a regular basis. We are actually coming up on our 50th anniversary, so stay tuned for a fun celebration!
In addition to our dynamic design community, PDC is also home to an impressive roster of tech, media, and film tenants, including industry giants like A24 Films, Paramount, and MGM. Moreover, the PDC Design Gallery in the Plaza stands as a testament to our commitment to art and design excellence. By collaborating with internationally renowned artists, celebrated designers, esteemed curators, professional design organizations, and leading academic institutions, the PDC Design Gallery harnesses the collective intelligence and creativity of California’s rich design culture. Together, these elements contribute to the vibrant tapestry of innovation and creativity that defines the Pacific Design Center.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Starting a professional career as a young female is an exhilarating journey but can be very intimidating. Embrace each opportunity with confidence and enthusiasm, knowing that your unique perspective and talents are valuable assets. Remember to stay true to yourself, trust your instincts, and never underestimate your potential to make a difference. Seek out mentors who inspire and support you, and don’t be afraid to ask for help or guidance along the way. I wish I had realized that failure is a natural part of the learning process and not something to be feared. Embracing setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth can ultimately lead to greater resilience and success in the long run.
