Conversations with Mandy Woo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mandy Woo.

Mandy Woo

Hi Mandy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My musical journey began at age four when my mom put me in piano lessons. Throughout my childhood, I always found myself gravitating towards music. I remember my past times included creating mixtapes, learning guitar riffs by ear or by tab books, playing from soundtrack books like The Simpsons, and making up random new songs on the piano. I was blessed to go to an arts high school as a music major, where I had to take a composition class. My teacher showed me that you could study composition in university, which is what I ended up doing. I went to the University of Toronto for my bachelor’s and then made my way to Berklee College of Music for a master’s degree in scoring for film, TV, and video games. During my undergrad years, by day I studied classical composition and by night, I was teaching myself music production and creating music under the moniker postmoderndisco.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I naively thought I could land work right after graduating with a composition degree, but it took a lot of navigating, mentoring, and consistent output of work.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a composer for media as well as a music producer under the moniker postmoderndisco. I score for film, TV and video games, while as postmoderndisco, I explore my obsession with layers and textures and in invoking feelings of yearning and nostalgia through music.

What are your plans for the future?
I have a few recent works for media in post-production right now – a very creatively stylized animation called “Marcharse” that is about the struggles of a student living away from home, and another called “Expedient”, directed by Eden Kavuma, that is heading to festivals. I will also be releasing a new postmoderndisco single in the next few months. I also helped work on an upcoming video game I can’t talk about yet but super excited for its release this year!
