Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison.
Hi Madison, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I found Yoga through being severely injured as a dancer. What I thought was the worst day of my life became the thing that brought me to my true calling. I fell in love with movement at a young age through ballet and all types of dance, but at 18 when that injury rendered me unable to move. It was Yoga that brought my body and my soul back to life. I did my training with Core Power in 2012 and then was divinely placed at Ra Yoga Costa Mesa a few months later.
Ra started its Teacher Training program a few months after I arrived and I am so blessed that I got to be a part of it from the very beginning. So I was an assistant and then I was a 200 hour lead and now I am a 300 hour Lead and Program Coordinator. I get to focus on developing our teachers and talking Vedic philosophy.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Is the right way ever a smooth path? Making a career as a full time yoga teacher meant teaching 25 classes per week at 5 different studios and 9 different gym locations throughout Orange County. I spent more time in my car than I did in a studio in the beginning. This lead to burn out and exhaustion. It took years to be in a position where I could think about or do anything other than teach yoga and be at a studio.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a yoga teacher who leads 300-hour teacher training programs, my work centers around cultivating a deep understanding of both the physical practice of yoga and the profound wisdom found in Vedic philosophy. I specialize in integrating these two aspects, helping students not only to develop their teaching skills but also to explore the philosophical underpinnings of yoga, such as concepts of dharma (duty), karma (action), and the nature of consciousness.
I’m known for creating a supportive and immersive learning environment where students feel encouraged to explore their own practices and beliefs. My approach emphasizes hands-on guidance, personalized feedback, and a strong sense of community. I often incorporate meditation, pranayama (breathwork), and discussions on ancient texts to enrich the learning experience.
One of the aspects I’m most proud of is witnessing the transformation of my students. Many find their voice and confidence as teachers, while others deepen their personal practice and understanding of themselves and the world around them. It’s incredibly rewarding to see individuals grow in their journey and embrace their unique path within yoga.
What sets me apart is my dedication to blending traditional teachings with modern applications. I strive to honor the roots of yoga while making it accessible and relevant to today’s practitioners. Through this holistic approach, I aim to inspire others to explore the connection between the mind, body, and spirit, fostering a deeper sense of awareness and compassion in their lives and teaching practices.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Yoga is not just about mastering poses; it’s a lifelong journey of self-discovery and growth. Allow yourself to be a beginner and enjoy the process without putting too much pressure on yourself.
Vedic philosophy offers profound insights into life, mindfulness, and self-awareness. Delving into texts and discussions can enrich your practice and teaching.
As you train to become a teacher, focus on what resonates with you. Allow your unique perspective to shine through in your practice and teachings. Authenticity builds trust and connection with your students.
The world of yoga is vast and ever-evolving. Keep an open mind and heart to different styles, perspectives, and experiences. Engage in workshops, community classes, and discussions to expose yourself to new ideas.
Always remember that everyone’s path is unique. Trust in your journey and know that it’s okay to ask for help and guidance along the way. Your commitment to learning and growing will shine through in your teaching and practice!
