Conversations with Lyrick Perez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyrick Perez.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started photography about I wanna say almost 10 years ago I think. It started with taking pictures on my phone, then slowly working more frequently and eventually getting a new camera throughout this whole process I was studying to be a pharmacist technician back in Aruba that that’s where I was born that’s where I stayed for the majority of my life until up to. I think I was 23 and decided to come to America to pursue basically at 180 from what I’ve studied which was from the medical Field to now the creative field. I love the idea of creating something visually something in my head that I’m trying to put out because I can’t explain it in words and a lot of the times I will be showing the models poses, but instead of using words, I use my own body to show it because it would be easier to do and of course they’re gonna do it a lot better. Going back to where I started, which was in Aruba there was a lot of tourist so during my process of learning photography, I went from taking pictures only at night to shooting during the day and found that I’m getting people messaging me to take their pictures and I was ecstatic cause I get to take pictures and also have some income coming in on that side at the same time at this. I was also working at my Pharmacy job which I did also enjoy. I was never the person that would sit behind a desk and be on a computer cause I feel like I would fall asleep so the Pharmacy job would I would be standing talking to people dealing with problems that keep coming up and for photography is kinda like some similarities to that I would interact a lot with the client make them feel as comfortable as possible and add to their experience on the island.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
was it a smooth road? yes and no the way i view things, if there’s a challenge, I’ll work it out the best I can without it having to phase me or get too stressed about. because it’s a small island where I lived it kind of worked out at the moment because everybody’s gonna condense and you can get to know more people and get connections and get into other stuff without you realizing that’s what’s happening because I would jump in different projects and I don’t even know how I got there. When I moved to America, I felt that changed a little more drastically to be able to get my voice out because everybody is being pushed to do better, which I do like, but it’s a lot more challenging because of how many people are doing the same exact thing.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specifically specialize in photography. I’ve done it for almost 10 years. All my friends always tell me great with framing, which is funny cause I don’t notice that I just shoot what I like and don’t really pay attention to technicalities until I went to school and learn more on the technical side of things. I always done photography more of with a gut feeling. I don’t really know how to describe myself. I think it’s more fashion and portraits that’s what comes to mind but also colorful. I like the idea of playing with the colors to make a nice of vibrant but also keeping a nice style with it and it took me years to figure out what my style and finally made one of my favorite preset from scratch. After this amount of time, I think I have it at the same time I think I’m also deviating a little bit off from it and also how I typically take pictures cause a lot of my pictures are very contrasted more commercial type but I’ve been playing with the idea of creating more story based and give more thought in what I’m photographing. I do want to mention is I have a few people that told my pictures look very film like which I do remember thinking I do like that aesthetic and I have a few pictures like that that I don’t really think I’ve posted too much.

What does success mean to you?
How do I define success? Personally I want to be healthy in any way possible mentally physically but also I want to be happy and I don’t want to feel stressed about finances because even if we notice it or not if we say finances are not important to be happy unconsciously still will affect you in a negative or positive way, but relieved from financial burden is something would also like. And people around me who love me and there whenever I need them and people who I can trust.
