Conversations with Laurie Lipton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Lipton.

Hi Laurie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in NYC in 1953, began drawing detailed images at the age of four, and never stopped. I’ve lived in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, London and moved to LA in 2011. My work has been exhibited extensively throughout Europe and the United States. “Method and subject converge in Laurie Lipton’s large-scale and exacting pencil drawings. With imagery as dense and multiple as her line work, Lipton draws with the precision of a brain surgeon. The results are stunning, worrying, funny and, above all, powerful.”

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I have been told repeatedly, by galleries and art agents, that I would not be able to make a living doing disturbing black & white pencil drawings, that I would need to paint, or add color pencils, and make the subject matter more amenable. I have been living off of my artwork for over 40 years.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do very detailed, very powerful, very unique pencil drawings. You can tell it’s my work from across the room. I have been drawing, exclusively, for over 60 years. No one can draw the way that I do. Quite frankly… no one would want to. It’s nuts.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Being able to get up and draw all day every day.
