Conversations with Lauren Castelo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Castelo

Hi Lauren, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always been fascinated by travel and storytelling. Growing up, I was glued to shows like Anthony Bourdain’s *No Reservations* and Samantha Brown’s *Passport to Europe*. Watching them explore different cultures with curiosity and respect made me dream of doing the same. As I got older, I felt a deep pull to reconnect with my own heritage. Coming from a hardworking immigrant Mexican family, I wanted to understand more about where I came from. So, I started traveling through Mexico—not just to the well-known spots, but to the small towns, local markets, and hidden gems that hold so much history and culture. The more I traveled, the more I realized how much there is to share. I started documenting my experiences, offering travel tips, and encouraging others—especially those with similar backgrounds—to explore their roots. Now, I’m focused on sharing these stories in hopes of inspiring more people to experience Mexico in a deeper, more personal way.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been the smoothest road, however long term I know it will be worth it. One of the biggest challenges has been having to step out of my comfort zone time and time again. Although I am confident in my Spanish speaking now, I’m still always a little nervous I’ll mispronounce something or that I will forget the translation of a word mid sentence decrediting my abilities.

There have been many moments of doubt, especially when trying to build a platform to share my experiences—wondering if my voice would resonate or if people would care about the stories I’m telling. Coming from a hardworking immigrant Mexican family, there’s also the unspoken pressure to take a more traditional path. Pursuing a passion for travel and storytelling isn’t always seen as the most stable or conventional choice. But I remind myself that representation matters. If I can inspire even one person to reconnect with their roots or explore a new place with confidence, then every challenge has been worth it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work is all about travel, storytelling, and cultural connection. I specialize in sharing travel experiences, particularly through the lens of reconnecting with heritage. My focus has been on exploring Mexico—not just the tourist hotspots, but the deeper, more personal side of the country that often goes unnoticed. Through my travel tips, insights, and experiences, I aim to inspire others to explore with curiosity and confidence.

What I’m most proud of is the impact my journey has had on others. I’ve received messages from people who, after seeing my experiences, felt encouraged to visit places they’ve always dreamed of or reconnect with their own roots. That, to me, is everything.

What sets me apart is my perspective. I’m not just traveling for the sake of seeing new places—I’m traveling with a purpose. As someone from a hardworking immigrant Mexican family, my travels are deeply personal. They’re about reclaiming stories, celebrating culture, and making these experiences accessible to others. I want to show that travel isn’t just for a select few—it’s for anyone willing to embrace adventure and step into their own story.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Start by asking questions. Talk to your grandparents, your parents, or any other family members that can share some insight on home. Ask them who they are in touch with back home and how to connect with them. Then do lots of research!
Once you get there, film everything. A lot of times it’s the little human things that people truly connect with.
