Conversations with Laura Bennett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Bennett.

Hi Laura, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My creative journey really began as a child, where my mom exposed me to multiple creative practices from a really young age. I was utilizing Adobe design software in 5th grade to type school papers, and spent summers in art classes at our local museum. Nonetheless, that foundation led me to pursue design formally. My senior year of college while getting my BFA I enrolled in Florence University of the Arts, kind of on a whim. I minored in French, so going to art school in Italy was never part of the plan.

That decision changed everything. Studying in Florence—surrounded by centuries of masterful typography, art, and design—really impacted my entire worldview. I came back more inspired, grounded, educated and eager to become a designer. I really grew in my love for typography and understanding the role that art and design have played in shaping cultures throughout history.

I started my career at The Walt Disney Company as a graphic designer, which was both invaluable training and an incredible professional experience. In 2017, I felt a clear calling to step away from corporate design to create work more aligned with my values and creative vision.

Launching Laura Bennett Design in Los Angeles was a leap of faith in the truest sense. What began as primarily branding and design services has evolved organically into a multi-disciplinary studio where I integrate my background in traditional art practices with contemporary design. Most recently, this evolution has included establishing LB Type, our dedicated font foundry.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The creative entrepreneurial path has certainly had its challenges. The early years were marked by learning, experimenting, and growth while simultaneously trying to find my distinct creative lane.

Perhaps the most persistent challenge over the years has been battling the temptation to conform to industry trends or expand services beyond our core strengths just to compete. I have immense respect for independent creatives running their own businesses—especially women. It’s incredibly challenging, and it can become easy to lose sight of your own vision when surrounded by what others are doing or feeling pressure from the industry to keep up. I’ve found it essential to stay inspired and rooted in truth and community when feeling overwhelmed by the demands of running a design business in Los Angeles. When doors closed or projects fell through, I’ve had to choose to take them in stride and trust that I’m right where I need to be.

The birth of LB Type emerged directly from such a period—what initially felt like a setback during covid (which changed my physical product business from fine art prints and stationery) actually became the catalyst for returning to my first love of typography and creating something wholly authentic to my creative vision.

Recently refreshing our entire studio site provided the perfect opportunity to officially launch our font foundry, LB Type. This evolution truly feels like version 2.0 of my business—a more refined and intentional expression of where we’ve been heading all along.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I run Laura Bennett Design, a multi-disciplinary Design Studio and font foundry based in Los Angeles, dedicated to serving Creative Entrepreneurs and Passionate Brands thorough thoughtful visual identities and memorable brand experiences. Our unique process leverages an expertise in custom lettering, typographic systems, and print and digital implementations. We specialize in services ranging from Brand Identity, Packaging Design, Bespoke Projects and more. Our independent font foundry, LB Type launched in February 2025 with a passion for expressive letterforms and typographic history with a commitment to quality, innovation and craft.

What truly distinguishes our approach is the integration of traditional artistry with visual design. I maintain a consistent studio practice in fine art, which directly influences our design work. I’ve always been keen for details and in a world that’s constantly being revolutionized by technology I think spending time on the minute, finite details of a piece is what can make all the difference.

Our mission is to create work that reflects something transcendent. I believe deeply that design isn’t just about aesthetics or strategy—it’s about creating order and structure and beauty in a way that really transcends a project. Whether designing a brand system, a packaging suite, or a new typeface, I try to approach each project as an opportunity to reflect something eternal through our craft.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t typically view life through the lens of ‘luck.’ As a Christian, I see so much of God’s guidance, provision, and protection in my story. The seemingly chance encounters that led to significant client relationships, the unexpected opportunities that arrived precisely when needed, the doors that opened after seasons of uncertainty—His hand has been all over it.

This perspective fundamentally shapes how I approach business decisions. Instead of merely strategic planning or opportunity-seeking, there’s a dimension of prayer, discernment, and trust that my steps are being ordered.

This isn’t to say I don’t work diligently to achieve our goals, or frankly find myself in seasons of striving, but rather I recognize that beyond my efforts, there’s a greater hand at work. The timing of LB Type’s launch, the relationships that have sustained our business through difficult seasons, even the creative inspiration that at times feels downloaded—I see these as expressions of grace rather than luck, and that perspective has brought profound meaning to both the success and struggles of entrepreneurship.
