Conversations with Kristina Gillego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristina Gillego.

Hi Kristina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Before becoming a full-time photographer, I worked professionally as a visual artist, retoucher and fashion model. I was also assisting photographers with styling. I also trained as a make-up artist to do for myself and for other models. I am deeply passionate about photography. After working with so many talented people I just realized that it is something I would love to do for many years. My background in modeling, and retouching makeup helps me become a better photographer. My favorite subjects are people, I love to create fashion stories and artistic, cinematic portraits.
I think that every person has a unique personality and beauty and I like to show it through my images.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Since I’m a Ukrainian/Russian immigrant there were several obstacles that slowed me down a bit in my photography career. One of them was a language barrier. I got it improved by getting my degree in Art/Photography major. Another one was lack of information about the system and market itself, So I was just trying different things at the same time to see how it will work for me. I was shooting different types of photography like family photography, events, and real estate, but found myself more attracted to work in the fashion industry and one on one with people.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Right now I am mostly focused on Fashion, Beauty, Editorial and E-commerce photography and videography work. Besides working for fashion companies, I enjoy working with actors, dancers and models for their portfolios and personal photoshoots for my clients. My unique background helps me to make my clients feel more comfortable in front of the camera even when they are not professional models.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
