Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Couture
Hi Kristin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started in the LA theater world. LA is known for film and TV but there is a vibrant theater scene going on out here that many newcomers don’t know about, and once you’re in, you’re in. That’s what happened to me. I was lucky enough to get a part at The Odyssey Theater shortly after graduating from conservatory and from there my name was passed around to other theaters in LA. For about 4 years I almost exclusively worked in theater. It was the best way to meet people. I was able to meet artists at all levels of their craft. Some of which are major players in the film world, but at theater events, they were all there for the love of storytelling. No Hollywood shallowness. Just a passion for creating and seeing new stories.
Naturally, these people inspired me along the way. Eventually, I wanted to try my hand in film but auditions were slow going and I’m not good at sitting around and twiddling my thumbs. I looked at all my talented friends who are writers, directors, cinematographers, etc., and thought, we should just start making stories we love instead of waiting around for people to find us. That’s how I became a producer. That’s how I started Daily Craving Productions in 2019.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Smooth roads are tricky. We all think we want them, but they teach us very little. I look at new actors or film makers who book a big show right away and I get nervous for them. They never learn to hustle. When that show or film eventually ends, they have to find the next job and it rarely appears as quickly as the first one. They become disheartened and because they didn’t learn the initial perseverance that comes with slow building a career, many give up the art form.
So no, building my career has not been a smooth road, but I have learned so much along the way and have become a stronger actor and producer because of it. I’ve hit many road blocks but when you know you’re in it for the long haul, you get really good at finding ways to maneuver around them.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an actor and the founder of Daily Craving Productions. I’ve acted/produced: films, podcasts, web series, theater, and more. If I like the story, then I’ll do my best to find the money and make it. That’s the most intimidating part actually. Finding the money, investors, etc.. The word “no” is heard often. There’s a lot of money in this world though and plenty of people wanting to check a new accomplishment off their bucket list. I don’t usually approach people in the film industry when I’m looking for funding. I approach lawyers, accountants, business owners, doctors…anyone I think might be attracted to the story I’m trying to create. Making stories can be an exciting new adventure to those who have never done it before.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Creativity can be everywhere. Don’t limit it to the art world. Be creative in your business practices as well. Try to find new ways to get around road blocks. There is more than one way to build a career and anyone who tell you otherwise is full of it.
