Today we’d like to introduce you to Krisha Garvey.
Hi Krisha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
So my partner Bernard Denney and I were school parent friends for years, our lives fully came together though after covid, some life shifting and heartbreak. The universe brought together our common values & creative sensibilities in a really positive, meaningful way. With collective skill sets (Krisha-aesthetician, artist, stylist & mom to three boys…Bernard-chef, retail creative, screen printer & dad to 4), we knew we could have a lot of fun collaborating & showcasing our cool, fun, nostalgic style with the community. Today, we are so excited to be sharing our brand, Only the Lonely, a retail storefront full of general provisions & cozy apparel for all!!!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We just went for it! Bernard already had the retail shop Hot Rod literally right next to the store…the welcoming reputation as Sawtelle Mayor as well…and we figured we didn’t have much to lose. We do all our own screen printing and create all the artwork so a concept can go from brilliant design thought to up on the hanger within days. Our supportive local community and a beautiful, unique co-partnership led to a very successful, positive project right out of the gate!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Only the Lonely is known for cozy US-grown cotton hoodies, sweats, shirts, shorts, hats, and sourced vintage clothing for men, women, and all ages. Our handmade ice-dye sweatsuits sell out all the time, too! They’re incredibly beautiful, special, one-of-a-kind pieces…a technique & process we’re so proud to share. Our designs are relatable and fresh, often a nod to ’80s 90’s nostalgia & the Wild West. Lots of flea market studio pottery and glassware, along with a wide selection of merchandise from women-owned brands that round out our neighborhood general store. Something for anyone, everyone!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is positively contributing to our neighborhood. Success is making new friends in customers who are drawn to the shop. Success means always listening to each other, testing out ideas, living with grateful hearts, and finding humor every day. Success is our built-out bench in front of the shop… the best thing we ever did! It’s a local daily hang out, characters & friends new and seasoned. Along with DJs, pop-up vendors & pizza nights (we roll out our oven onto the sidewalk!), it feels like Sesame Street!
Success is sharing our creative energy with others & practicing kindness always.
