Conversations with Kellen Meyer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kellen Meyer.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a Contemporary Artist focused on Large Scale Fiber Art Installations, Sculptures, and Collaborations with Galleries and Boutique Hotels.

My Art is Rooted in Nature and influenced by the colors, shapes and textures in the wild outdoors. This influence weaves a common thread throughout my work. I entwine a variety of natural fibers to create hand-woven art works that integrate knitting, crochet, and various weaving techniques. I also utilize other natural materials including wool, fabric, cotton, wood, paper, willow, reed, etc. I explore the natural world and nurture story within each piece. Each creation is a unique, one-of-a-kind work of Art.

I’m based in Southern California and create in a studio overlooking a bird sanctuary. I walk daily on the beach collecting colors, stories, and images. I love fairytales, afternoon light, magic in the everyday and warm sourdough bread. I believe in the power of Love and Lattes.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest struggle I’ve had has come straight from my own mind. Of course, there are many things that get thrown in the way with life. There always will be. But, I would say my most significant struggle was overcoming my own fear and doubt of becoming an Artist. I spent many years circling around it. Many years thinking maybe I wasn’t good enough. Many years holding my ideas tight. Then one day, I became fed up with the waiting. Waiting for the exact right moment to start. Waiting to be less fearful. Instead, I decided to replace my fear with curiosity. The question of, will this work, became won’t this be exciting regardless of the outcome. The question of, will I be good enough became how amazing it is to share my skills and learn new ones along the way. The question of failure became won’t it be an amazing adventure- success or failure. The biggest failure or struggle became not doing the Art. I already feel that I’m successful simply because I get up each morning and make it a priority to see what it can become that day. And remember, Failure is where you learn the best stuff anyway!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

How do you think about luck?
I think luck is like talent. No matter how “lucky” or “talented” you are, it will only take you so far. You can sit back and hope it all works or you can actively go out and try. Fail. Try again. Open yourself up to challenges to learn new things and be willing to ask questions and be really bad at something. Most of what success is, is doing the work even when it’s hard. I suppose I feel that luck is only lucky if you make it so. Talent is only talent if you put in the work to continue to learn, stretch, and grow. Success is only the decision to keep going when everyone else has gone home. When the twelve things you’ve tried haven’t worked and you stay to find that the 13th does, that’s when you succeed. To me, it’s always been about hard work, goals, dedication, and most of all curiosity. Life is a choice every day. Do we engage and do our best or not? I choose Yes. Yes, to all the steps that take you to the one that works. An absolute YES to curiosity and a vibrancy for a life well lived. No regrets and no Luck needed.
