Today we’d like to introduce you to Kashton Kane.
Hi Kashton, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Hawaii born and raised. I am originally from the Big Island and moved to California when I was 19. I’ve always had a ravenous appetite to learn and find ways to express myself creatively. Whether it was painting, fashion, or graphic design, I’ve always followed the beat of my own drum and believed that I was brought on this earth for a purpose.
That purpose to always authentically express myself through my own unique point of view with whatever medium it may be. That in itself is so powerful because it allows people to see themselves through what you create and your own vulnerability. I got over the constricting idea of limiting myself to only being one thing. I’m a triple air sign, so I always just flow to what feels right to me in that moment.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Imposter syndrome is real, let me tell you! However, I’ve learned to accept the fact that I will always have a strong inner saboteur waiting for me to fail and feed me a negative narrative. It’s learning to find the right tools to balance those thoughts and letting your saboteur be the fuel to propel you forward. It’s easier said than done but remember to take one day at a time.
With time and practice, you will learn to keep your “shadow” in front of you because it can’t ever take you down from the front, only from behind.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a multidisciplinary creative who loves painting, illustration, and design. My Hawaiian roots and upbringing fuel my daily creative practice and professional work – the lush, tropical landscape; Hawaiian Mythology, vibrant color spectrums of the coral pink sunsets, and exploring the subterranean caves formed by ancient flowing lava sit at the forefront of my subconscious mind and are endless creative pools for my practice. My work is also recognized for my bold use of color, symbolism, and texture.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Every time I step outside of my door, I take a risk. Being an openly queer poc, I never hold back in any area of who I truly am. Society needs more of us. I’m proud of who I am. So, I take risks in every and which way I can because, again, when you are always authentically you, you never know the positive impact you may have on others that day by being YOU!
