Conversations with Karnie Liao

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karnie Liao

Hi Karnie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I was known as one of the smart kids who got good grades and studied a lot. Although I was good at it, I didn’t find academia interesting or fun. Instead, I found joy through consuming stories. I spent hours reading novels, history books, and comics in my school library. When I wasn’t reading or studying, I copied drawings of my favorite characters from whatever media occupied my mind. This inspiration and motivation still stick with me today while I pursue a career in concept art and illustration.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I hadn’t considered pursuing a career in art until my senior year of high school. Up until then, I’d been preparing to become a computer scientist. Since I made that pivot, there’s been several moments where I doubted my choice. However, the hardest part of the journey has been dealing with my self-doubts. Despite the bumps in the road, I don’t regret pursuing art.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a 2D concept artist and illustrator. I specialize in character, prop, and environment designs. I pride myself on my world-building, problem-solving skills, and adaptability to various styles or genres. From childhood to the present, I have always consumed all forms of media and incorporated them into my works.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Risk-taking does not come easily to me, but pursuing art over computer science was one of my most significant risks. I ended up choosing to give art a chance after realizing I’d regret the choice for the rest of my life if I didn’t. I’ve been pleased with that decision, and I think about the risks on the metric of the amount of regret I’d have if I hadn’t taken that leap of faith.
