Today we’d like to introduce you to Kari “krown” Brown
Hi Kari “Krown”, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been a storyteller at heart. Born in Houston, Texas and raised in Los Angeles, my creative roots were nurtured by both of my parents, who are storytellers in their own right. Along with my brother, they were my earliest influences. During my adolescent years, I dabbled in acting and gymnastics, but I found myself running from my creativity. I had a deep-seated desire to fit in, to remain unnoticed—I was shy and longed to take up as little space as possible.
However, high school brought a turning point. As the only African American in my class, I was thrust into situations that demanded I find my voice. The challenges I faced made it impossible to stay silent, and it was in this environment that I discovered my passion for advocacy. I became outspoken about the things I deeply care about.
Graduating as the first African American and woman in my high school, I knew I wanted to continue my education at Spelman College. I realized I was carrying a lot of internal struggles and needed to immerse myself in a community that would celebrate and uplift me—specifically, a community that would honor me not just as a person, but as a Black woman. At Spelman, I found the freedom to simply be—and in that space, I was able to look inward and truly discover my passions. It was here that I fully embraced my identity as a creative, a storyteller.
Today, I express myself through various mediums—whether it’s TV/Film, skincare, or modeling—but my purpose remains the same: to tell stories that empower others. Above all, I am deeply committed to empowering others and helping them find their own voices, just as I’ve learned to do along my journey.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing truly worth having comes easily. Throughout my life, I’ve faced numerous obstacles, but I’ve always used each challenge as fuel to keep pushing forward. One of the most defining and life-changing obstacles I encountered was a car accident in 2022. It brought with it a range of physical and emotional trauma, but the most significant impact was the third-degree burns I sustained on my face.
When the accident occurred, the airbag exploded directly into my face, leaving me with burns that were not only physically painful but also deeply emotional. This was a pivotal moment in my life. It forced me to completely reevaluate my perspective on beauty, life and resilience. In many ways, the experience reshaped how I see the world and myself. While it was an incredibly difficult time, it also became a catalyst for personal growth, pushing me to find strength in places I never knew existed.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a creative, I don’t limit myself to just one thing. I like to think of myself as a storyteller because I find joy in using different avenues to tell stories. When I’m not acting, I love working behind the scenes as part of production crews. My passion for the craft is undeniable, and I firmly believe that having experience on both sides—the acting and the crew—makes you a better performer. It deepens your understanding and respect for the entire process and broadens your perspective. Working behind the scenes also gives you the chance to expand your skill set and amplify your voice in various environments, which is something I value deeply.
I’m most proud of my ability to take initiative and go after what I want. I’ve learned not to wait around for opportunities to come to me, and I admire my go-getter mentality. Resilience is another trait I hold in high regard. After my accident, I realized that many others had experienced similar injuries. Since God healed me, I felt a strong calling to help others heal as well. This led me to create my first product for my skincare brand, using the same ingredients that helped me heal my scars.
That, in essence, is what sets me apart: MY story. No two people are the same, and we all have unique journeys. What truly sets us apart is what we choose to do with those stories.
