Conversations with Kamilah Meek

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamilah Meek

Hi Kamilah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into the entertainment industry is one of perseverance, passion, and an unwavering drive to succeed. It all started when I was three years old. My mother, recognizing something special in me, sought out an agent, got my first headshots, and began taking me to auditions. She believed in me wholeheartedly and introduced me to the industry. Her determination paved the way for everything I’ve accomplished since.

In high school, I attended a middle college program, a unique type of school where I worked toward both my Associate of Arts degree and high school diploma. At the same time, I was booking featured roles on shows like iCarly, Zoey 101, and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. I also served as the captain of my high school dance team, leading us to numerous victories while honing my performance skills. Juggling academics, acting, and dance never felt overwhelming because I was doing what I loved. These experiences instilled in me a strong work ethic, creativity, and the ability to pursue my passions wholeheartedly—qualities that continue to shape me today.

Getting accepted into UCLA was a defining moment for me, especially as a young African-American woman in such a competitive field. I initially started as an economics major but quickly realized it wasn’t the right fit—I even considered quitting altogether. My mother, however, refused to let me give up. She encouraged me to take a month off to regroup, and during that time, I booked a role on Nickelodeon’s Victorious, which reignited my passion for storytelling. With a new perspective, I applied to UCLA’s highly competitive Film, Television, and Digital Media program—and I got in.

At UCLA, I studied under brilliant instructors like Bill McDonald, Neema Barnette, and Fabian Wagmister, learning everything from lighting and scriptwriting to shooting on film. During my time there, I produced my first short film, Live the Dream, which won two UCLA Donor Awards. UCLA wasn’t just an education—it was the spark that launched my dreams into reality.

After graduating, I continued to act and worked behind the scenes on NBC’s The Voice and later NBC’s Access Hollywood. There, I immersed myself in production, learning the ins and outs of live shows, call sheets, wardrobe fittings, and makeup. This hands-on experience gave me a deep appreciation for every aspect of the entertainment industry.

Everything I’ve experienced has led me to this moment. As an actress, I’ve had the privilege of appearing in Wicked City (AllBlk), Young Rock (NBC), Tyler Perry’s All the Queen’s Men (BET+), and the upcoming Beyond the Gates (CBS, premiering February 24, 2025). Each step has been a lesson and a blessing, and I’m grateful for the opportunities that have shaped me into the artist I am today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For a while, the road seemed smooth, but everything changed when I lost my Nana in 1999. She was the heart of our family and taught me the meaning of unwavering faith. When she passed, it felt like the foundation beneath me had crumbled, leaving a void I didn’t know how to fill.

Many years later, while watching the movie Moana, something shifted inside me. The story helped me reconnect with my ancestors and reminded me of Nana’s presence—her strength, her faith, and her unwavering love. From that moment, I committed myself to honoring her legacy. Every step I take is rooted in the strength and faith she instilled in me.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an actress, producer, and model with a deep understanding of the entertainment industry from both creative and technical perspectives. My journey began at a young age, and earning my Bachelor’s degree from UCLA’s prestigious Film, Television, and Digital Media program was a pivotal achievement that sharpened my skills and broadened my vision.

As an actress, I strive to bring authenticity, realness, and a little bit of myself into every role, creating characters that feel genuine and relatable. As a producer, I approach every project with creativity and precision, ensuring it comes to life in alignment with its vision.

For me, this isn’t just a career—it’s a calling. I’m proud to bring meaning and impact to the work I create and honored to leave a legacy through the stories I help tell.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking is about building genuine relationships. For me, it’s been less about what others can do for me and more about creating meaningful connections through authenticity and shared interests. I’ve found that being curious, showing genuine interest in others, and being willing to collaborate opens doors naturally. It’s not about quantity but quality—real connections lead to real opportunities.
