Today we’d like to introduce you to Julisa Chavez.
Hi Julisa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Looking back, I’ve always been creative at heart. I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley to an incredible family who showed me love, resilience, and unwavering support. From a young age, I was taught the importance of education, which led me to pursue a degree in Business and later, a master’s degree. At the same time, I began what would become my 15-year career in non-profit work.
During those years, I had the privilege of working with incredible organizations that brought essential programs to the underrepresented communities of the Northeast San Fernando Valley. I loved the work – helping others reach their potential and shift their mindset toward growth. However, as I was working to help hundreds of others, I realized I wasn’t nurturing my potential. Almost a year ago I took a leap of faith. I spent time discovering what truly brings me joy.
It was the best decision I’ve ever made. I reconnected with the creativity that had always been a part of me. For years, family, friends, and co-workers told me I had a creative spark, but it wasn’t until I paused to reflect that I began to believe it myself. Every chapter of my life has been a blessing and a building block, shaping the person I am today. I am blessed that along the way I made incredible connections with people who have mentored, supported, and guided me. Two of the most influential people in my life have been my parents, who never held me back and instead gave me a legacy of hard work, loyalty, and perseverance.
While I’m still in the early pages of this next chapter, I’m excited to see where my story is headed. Last year, I launched my own event decor and planning business where I have been able to practice my creative visions through so many mediums. As a young girl, my dad taught me to work with my hands and see tools as an extension of my imagination. Today, those lessons allow me to craft custom pieces for my customers that will make their events memorable while giving me a way to express my creativity.
For a moment, I wondered if it was too late for such a bold pivot. But it never is, not when everything in your heart tells you it’s the right path. If you have a dream, take that leap. Life is so short, and the present becomes history in the blink of an eye. Take that chance. Follow that dream. Take time to rediscover who you truly are.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The most breathtaking destinations often lie at the end of the most challenging roads. I can certainly say this about my journey. Life has presented me with challenges that seemed insurmountable. But over time, I’ve come to see that every obstacle carries a lesson. Within each of these setbacks lies the potential for personal, professional, and emotional growth.
There were times when I was too hard on myself, quick to blame myself for not being prepared or not catching a mistake before it happened. That mindset, although rooted in my desire to do well, was not emotionally or realistically sustainable. Eventually, it chipped away at my confidence. I learned that growth cannot happen without grace and self-confidence. My advice? Embrace the challenge. Take a step back. Reflect. Learn from the experience. Every experience, no matter how difficult, can become a stepping stone to something greater if we allow it to be.
