Conversations with Joshua Rhodes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Rhodes

Hi Joshua, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I created April’s Fool LA in 2019 when I was a freshman at the University of Arizona. Growing up, my life revolved around sports, especially basketball, which took up most of my time and energy. However, I’ve always had a deep love for fashion that simmered beneath the surface. I knew that college would be the perfect time to explore this passion more seriously and take the first steps toward building my own brand.

Upon arriving at the university, I was eager to connect with like-minded individuals and expand my horizons. I decided to join a fraternity not only to make new friends but also to immerse myself in a vibrant social scene that could provide valuable networking opportunities. The fraternity experience opened doors to various events and collaborations, allowing me to meet people from diverse backgrounds, all while honing my leadership skills.

As I navigated through my classes and fraternity life, I began to sketch out my vision for April’s Fool LA. I wanted to create a brand that celebrated individuality and self-expression through fashion. I started by researching trends, understanding my target audience, and developing my design aesthetic. Balancing academics, fraternity obligations, and my burgeoning business wasn’t always easy, but my passion kept me motivated.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest struggles was balancing my time. Juggling college coursework, fraternity commitments, and launching a brand was overwhelming at times. There were nights when I’d stay up late working on designs or managing social media, only to wake up early for classes. Learning to prioritize and manage my time effectively was a constant challenge.

Additionally, when I first launched April’s Fool LA, I faced hurdles in getting the word out. Building an audience from scratch is tough, and there were moments of doubt when I wondered if I’d ever gain traction. I experimented with different marketing strategies and learned the importance of staying authentic to my brand.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As of now, I’m a fashion designer navigating the vibrant scene in Los Angeles, and I’m passionate about bringing dreams to reality through my designs. My specialty lies in transforming bold ideas into tangible pieces that resonate with individuality and self-expression. I believe that fashion is not just about clothing; it’s a medium through which people can communicate who they are and how they feel.

What I’m most proud of is my commitment to authenticity. I’ve built April’s Fool LA around the principle of being unapologetically myself, which has allowed me to connect deeply with others who share a similar ethos. My designs reflect a blend of personal experiences, cultural influences, and a desire to inspire confidence in those who wear them. Whether it’s through striking patterns, unique silhouettes, or innovative materials, my goal is to create pieces that encourage self-expression and empower individuals to embrace their true selves.

Ultimately, my journey is about more than just creating clothes; it’s about fostering a community where people can feel free to be themselves. I’m excited to continue evolving as a designer, learning from experiences, and creating pieces that resonate with the dreams and aspirations of others.

What matters most to you? Why?
My family and friends. Without them I wouldnt be where I am today.
