Conversations with Jorge Serrano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Serrano.

Hi Jorge, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Looking back, I can say that it all started from a terrible haircut I got as a kid from a local barbershop. I remember leaving so upset about them butchering my hair.

I asked for a pair of scissors and a clipper set for Christmas and from then on I started cutting my own hair. I was that kid who loved fashion, art, music and everything beauty! I was obsessed with having the perfect hairstyle and outfits.

I eventually figured it out and was really good at giving myself haircuts. Soon after, friends and family took notice and wanted me to do their hair. It became a hobby of mine and a way to make quick cash that I spent on the latest fashions.

I didn’t think I could make a career out of it so I enrolled at FIDM to study fashion buying and merchandising. It caught my interest for about two semesters until I took a year off to figure out what I was really meant to do. It wasn’t long until I fell back in love with doing hair after meeting a beautiful drag queen by the name of Jackie D. She was a hairstylist and worked at one of the hottest salons in LA. She would have me help style her wigs and get her ready for her performances at a gay bar in Buena Park. Working with her inspired me to go to cosmetology school and start my career in hair.

I opened up Serrano Salon in November 2019. My dear friend and client Paola Russo owner of Just One Eye gave me the amazing opportunity to be inside her well-curated fashion house.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was a roller coaster of emotions when opening Serrano Salon. There were many challenges when covid hit four months after opening. It felt like my dreams of owning my own salon was over. I lost employees and stylists and started to lose hope. I started to lose hope, but thank God for being driven and not letting my dream die, I remained positive and work through it all.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an artist, I love everything hair from color, highlighting, cutting and styling. I specialize in creating a look from start to finish for every person that sits in my chair.

I have worked very hard to get to where I am today. I own Serrano Salon in Hollywood, inside of the Luxury fashion house Just One Eye. I’ve worked on KUWTK as Kris Jenner’s hairstylist since season 13. I am also known for working with Michaele and Neal Schon, founder of the band Journey.

I am most proud of my accomplishments of building a successful clientele, opening up my own salon and finding a work life balance.

How do you think about luck?
I would say luck is something that happens to people who stay driven and motivated! I am very lucky that I get to fulfill my dreams every day and make people feel and look good with beautiful hair.
