Conversations with Jordyn Kane

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordyn Kane.

Hi Jordyn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Orlando, Florida, and music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I always did the talent shows in elementary school, plays, and musicals, and I performed at restaurants all around the Orlando area. I knew I wanted to live in Los Angeles and be a songwriter, so I moved here when I turned 18 and graduated from high school. A few years later, I started by working for a sync company where I was a salaried songwriter and worked 9 to 5 writing music for TV, film, and commercials. I worked there for five years but realized it was time to start something new, and I was ready to work for myself as well. Now I am a freelance songwriter, I write songs for everything from TV to K-pop.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has by no means been a smooth road. As a songwriter, you’re constantly making music that gets rejected, struggling financially, and of course, dealing with writer’s block on the daily. So many times people have said no to putting my songs in their movies or cutting my song as an artist. I’ve heard no so many times, but there’s always going to be a yes at some point. I struggled financially for so long. with the change in the music industry from physical distribution to digital songwriters get paid less and less. Unless you have a number-one song on the radio, it’s very difficult to make a decent living from it. But I found that there are many niche ways to make money as a songwriter in the music industry. It’s all about looking for them and being open to new ideas.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a session singer/songwriter. I sing songs that other people, right, for TV and film. And I write songs for other people to sing. You can hear my voice in all different kinds of cartoons, including Barbie. I have been performing is the singing voice for Barbie in all of their recent TV shows and movies. I also sing for nickelodeon, Disney, E, and so many more. In addition to writing songs for the big screen and artists, I also write songs for DJs to produce around, and I even write custom songs for people to send to their family members, friends, etc. on holidays. I am most proud of the fact that I’ve been able to make a full-time living on writing songs in this difficult-to-navigate industry.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I listen to so many podcasts! A great one for songwriters is called, and the writer is. I love a good motivational podcast, and one of my favorites, for that is the Mel Robbins podcast. I also used tons of apps for my business, one of my favorites is rhyme zone! I’m always trying to learn more about the music industry and how to be a better songwriter. So I’m always looking up tutorials on YouTube made by other creators.
