Conversations with John Mullican

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Mullican

Hi John, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am part of a unique club that has haunted me my entire life: I am a commercial airplane crash survivor. I am convinced that I would be a very different person today if I hadn’t gone through that terrifying night. Without a doubt it has scarred me my entire life — until now — when I finally decided to confront my pain through writing and performing in a play about it. After a sold out workshop production of “In the Unlikely Event of an Actual Emergency” last March, it will open for its world premiere at the Hudson Theatre in Hollywood this fall, September 20-October 26.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The hardest challenge has been accepting the truth, my emotional connection to that truth, and how to express it. If you’re blessed to live long enough on planet earth, you will, at some point in your life, encounter tragedy or loss of some kind. It’s part of the human experience. There’s no getting around it. Whether you’re an airplane crash survivor, a cancer survivor, or a survivor of another kind of trauma, it’s HOW you deal with it and HOW you express it that matters.

So here I am.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I was raised by artists. Both my parents, artist Luchita Hurtado and Lee Mullican, always instilled me that should you ever have a problem in life, go to your art. That’s where you will find peace; that’s where you will find your answer and it will all make sense. Then you can move forward. I’ve worked as a WGA Screenwriter, an advertising Copywriter, a marketing Creative Director, and now a Playwright.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
To find one, go to your joy. Go to the joy in any given situation, as difficult as it may be, and you will find peace, solace, friendship, and community. As human beings, we know joy. It’s in our soul. If we see it in ourselves, others will too. And I’m not talking about “likes” or “follows.” Those will come if we authentically express who we are and share our true walk in the expression of our art. We do that, and a mentor will show up with open arms. That is the exchange, and the meaning, of our artistic life. With my play, I cannot express enough how many incredible people have shown up in my life to share this journey with me and for us to experience this incredible “flight” together.
