Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Avery.
Hi Joey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
While I actually began my journey as a comedian during a six months stint in South Africa, my standup has really been formed and shaped by time spent in the three biggest comedy scenes in California. I hit the open mic scene in San Diego while finishing up at UCSD before returning to my hometown in the Bay Area and developing for several years in the San Francisco scene until I felt I was ready to make the move to LA and really start making a career of it.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Stand-up comedy isn’t really a smooth road to anybody. Unless you consider walking home in tears from open mics and bars full of uninterested patrons “smooth.”
I remember leaving one open mic in San Francisco that went particularly poorly, questioning pretty much all of my life decisions right as a rainstorm started. The entire walk back was uphill. It felt like a cliche and badly written scene from a movie, which made me laugh, which itself felt like too obvious a metaphor.
But all those moments make the good ones more meaningful, and they prepare you for the rest of the journey which still isn’t smooth.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Stand Up Comedian.
I’ve gained a lot of traction online with my improvised crowd interaction clips as well as the written sets I’ve released through both Comedy Central and Don’t Tell Comedy.
I am the only comedian to be currently pretending to run for Mayor of Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Scottsdale, AZ with more to come.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
The Creative Act by Rick Ruben has been my favorite book of late. Alternatively, the Little Engine that Could is an absolute banger.
