Conversations with Jillian Suzanne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jillian Suzanne.

Hi Jillian, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a multidisciplinary abstract artist living in Los Angeles(Inglewood) CA. Born and raised in Michigan, I attended Western Michigan University, studying fine art. Soon after college, I took a detour to pursue the art of hair design in New York City. After 20ish years of taking a break from art, I found my way back in 2018. As of late, my primary focus is African inspired art, which celebrates my family lineage. I would say, my art is storytelling and gives voice to those that had no voice. I primarily focus on feminine and the female form. I don’t have a style, I just create what feels natural. My art is ever evolving and will continue to explore my deep ancestral roots which explores and honors my african ancestors

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not sure what you mean by a “smooth road”? There are always challenges in life. I look at it like this, we are all exactly where we need to be in this moment. This path I’m on is continuing. There is no “I’ve arrived” moment

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My art is an inspiration from what moves me naturally. That currently is my African lineage. I am moved by the women who came before me. Giving them voice through beautiful artistic expression. I don’t specialize in anything. But currently I prefere painting these days. For a while, I really got into digital art and other times drawing. So, whatever feels authentic to me I go with. But no matter what, my primary inspiration is driven by female representational art.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Yes, I always say some kind of a prayer and thank my ancestors before starting a piece
