Today we’d like to introduce you to Jiayue Li.
Jiayue, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I embarked on my artistic journey at the age of six in Chengdu, China, my hometown. Guided by an impassioned art teacher, her love for engaging with children and imparting the joy of drawing became the cornerstone of my early artistic education. We ventured to fields, villages, and parks for live drawing sessions, creating a treasure trove of delightful childhood memories.
My artistic pursuits expanded over the years, encompassing skills in watercolor, oil painting, and pencil sketching. For a significant period, my aspiration was to emulate my teacher—a formidable and independent woman who operated drawing classes for children while instilling her profound beliefs in the practice of art.
However, my perspective evolved, and I became intrigued by the practical integration of art into daily life. Consequently, I pursued graphic design as my undergraduate major in Shanghai. In the fall of 2017, I furthered my studies in New York, enrolling in the MFA Design Program at the School of Visual Arts.
New York exposed me to the captivating world of illustration and art through esteemed publications like The New Yorker and The New York Times. The concept of using illustration as a medium to convey and simplify powerful ideas captivated me. Throughout my graduate studies, I dedicated substantial time to sketching, experimenting with compositions and color palettes, and gradually honing my distinctive style.
Since completing my graduate program, I have been fully immersed in the realm of graphic design and illustration. This professional journey allows me to apply my artistic skills in a meaningful way, merging creativity with practicality.
As I continue to navigate my artistic path, I am committed to exploring new techniques, experimenting with diverse styles, and drawing inspiration from the world around me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think it has been an exciting yet challenging road. In looking for the best way to express myself through art, I tried many approaches and experimented with different subjects. I spent a lot of time developing my own unique artistic style.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
