Conversations with Jesús “Chuy” Soria

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesús “Chuy” Soria.

Hi Jesús “Chuy”, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started when I was 12 years old, I got my first curling iron at a Yard Sale, and I will never forget how exciting my walk back home was! I started by paying my clients (neighbor’s daughters) chips and candy, so they can sit and let me curl their hair, lol, and then neighbors started asking me if I may curl their hair for special events. After high school, I went straight to Beauty School, became a licensed cosmetologist in 2011 and worked at Start Threading & Hair Salon in Riverside Ca for seven years on and off until the pandemic hit in 2019! I left the hair industry and worked a full year as a caregiver caring for seniors in memory care. Where I got to use my state board bang and roller set skills I learned back in Beaty school with my seniors! Then COVID goes down and everything reopens, and I’m back to doing what I love and loving it more than ever! Styling Brides and Quinceañeras for their Special day has been a beautiful experience. Making anybody feel and look great, that moment they are admiring themselves with a big smile and a twinkle in their eye, that right there, is my Joy!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ll start by admitting that it was a rocky one but I made it rocky myself! I was young, dumb, and made even dumber decisions that kept me from focusing on my career. I also believe that everything happens for a reason and I don’t regret nor do I look back at the past. I am focused and eager to pursue my dreams in my hairstylist career! The drive and determination I have now is paying off and it shows in my work. I can honestly say I love what I do!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I Love Curling Hair! I hear from my clients how they love the way I curl the hair! I’d say I’m most proud of myself! For pushing and believing in myself and my work, not that anybody wouldn’t, but me myself, I didn’t believe in myself and my work, but I do now and it shows. I have made myself so proud and I’m nowhere near where I want to go. What sets me apart from others? Everything. I Am Chuy!

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Absolutely! Working In the healthcare industry during COVID and seeing many people lose their lives made me realize how we take life and opportunities to grow and live and experience life for granted! I have learned that we only live once and it’s up to us how we want to live this life, what makes me happy is to make others feel happy by providing a hairstyle that makes them feel great at the moment! Live the moment, enjoy the moment, the past is the past, today we are here and tomorrow is not promised!
