Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessy Greene.
Hi Jessy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Sheffield, a tiny village in western Massachusetts. I am a lover of music and music has saved my life. I was classically trained on the violin from age four. But by the time I was 16, I was a drug-addicted runaway and classical music didn’t fit into that story, so I gave it up. At 18, I found myself in Los Angeles with a strong desire to play the violin again. I began my new musical journey from a totally different perspective, one of experimentation and non-conformity. This new path gave me inspiration and hope, enough to get myself together and be accepted into UCLA’s Ethnomusicology department. I began playing with fellow students in an art-punk rock band and got gigs and started touring after I graduated. Since then, I have been incredibly blessed with co-creators, amazing bands and sound magicians who have taught and continue to teach me so much about the power of sound and intention, inspiring my lifelong investigation into these phenomena. We are all connected to one another and this extraordinary vibrating planet. I believe sound vibration and music illuminates this light between us. After college, I was living in Minneapolis working as a German bar maid to supplement my music income when I got a phone call from my good friend, Rami Jaffee, keyboardist for the Foo Fighters, asking if I want to go on tour with them. It was one of the most memorable phone calls of my life.
Of course, I said yes and once again my path spiraled into a whole new dimension. I had toured the US for years in a van and a bus here and there and a little bit of Europe, but this was touring the world with the Foo Fighters! Words can not express how incredible and life-changing this time was. I was lucky enough to meet P!nk on a 2008 European summer festival tour and began playing with her soon after. Joining her Beautiful Trauma tour (2017-2019) was an epic and heart-expanding experience. I have also found myself in studios co-creating with RZA, Wilco and many more amazing artists as well as recording string sections and composing for film and TV in my home studio in Venice Beach, CA. Years ago, I began a sound healing voyage with Rami Jaffee, improvising with special frequencies and intentions to inspire investigation of the self and consciousness. Life is always challenging, but these past few years have been especially chaotic for most of us. I am incredibly grateful to live here in Venice and for the peace and security I have found in a daily mindful practice which includes music, breath, nature, and bike rides on the beach with my dog and friends.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I believe challenges and obstacles have been essential to discovering who I am. One of the many reasons I am grateful for my years on this planet is I’ve been through so much I know now it is all going to work out because it always does, not necessarily the way I think it should but that’s how it goes. I can still get stressed out but when I stop to listen, breath and become present, most obstacles and challenges become way less threatening. It isn’t always easy to be positive but I find it definitely makes life more enjoyable as does being kind to yourself and others.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I play violin, cello, guitar, keyboards, sing and compose a variety of styles of music. I can read music but I really love to improvise and write my own parts. I have written solo violin pieces for tv shows such as CW’s The Originals, Pretty Little Liars and the Stargirl Series, and composed music for ABC’s The Fosters and Fox’s Bones, I record and produce these compositions in my home studio in Venice. I really love to create and record music by myself and with others… I also have an intense passion for performing live. Improvisation can be a conversation with other players and the audience. It is such a rush to tune into the space, listen to what is happening and add energy to the mix by feeling my way to the notes. The right frequencies and sounds can completely shift our perceptions, helping us to connect to our deeper self and each other. As a musician touring with the biggest acts in the world for years, I have long recognized the healing powers of music. My study of frequency, intention and resonant heart-mind entrainment has led to learning and developing a unique approach to sound healing. I love creating original music and sounds using traditional string instruments with specially tuned machines, synthesizers and effects, combined with powerful intentions to create a variety of flow states and assistance for healing and recovery.
