Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Sample.
Hi Jessica, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After graduating from Brown University I worked in the photo department of Travel + Leisure and stayed there for over five years occasionally shooting for the magazine with the shared Pentax 67 medium format film camera. I moved home to LA with my husband in 2011 and have been doing freelance photography since then. I was lucky enough to be a photographer when magazines were still doing great and got a lot of experience then. I now shoot for brands and commercial clients in addition to my editorial clients.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Things are not where they used to be with magazines dwindling and the rise of influencer and content creators.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am deeply passionate about travel and other cultures. I’d like to think I’m known for not only capturing travel images that are immersive and make you want to go there but also having a feeling of the unexpected. When I’m shooting I want to create something unique that you can frame and live with on your walls for a long time.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I’m from Los Angeles so it’s the devil I know and love and also sometimes don’t love. As a photographer I love the light here, the wide variety of landscapes, and the warm weather. I also love all the healthy food with produce grown year round. I love the freedom of hopping in your car and being somewhere different and beautiful in two hours. We moved from Beachwood Canyon to the Silverlake reservoir and I love how it feels like a real neighborhood over here where you run into people and my kids can go play outside with friends easily while we can still walk to restaurants and cafes. I don’t love how dirty it has become and that the city still can’t seem to figure out how to help the people and animals living on the street so all of us can live clean and safe lives.
