Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Pierre.
Hi Jessica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Jessica also known as Jacmacmakeup. I was born and raised in Brooklyn,NY. My parents are immigrants from Haiti. I started doing makeup professionally at 20 years old. I’ve always had a love for makeup but not necessarily a passion to service others. My love for makeup didn’t start like every other little girl. I struggled with acne at a very young age which eventually caused me to experience hyperpigmentation ( dark marks ). We all know what that does to a young girl’s confidence. Makeup became almost a necessity for me. In middle school, I started using my mother’s Avon products to cover up the dark marks my acne left behind. At just a young age, I saw how makeup enhanced my natural features and how easy it was to cover up my insecurities. By the time I reached college, I was a pro at doing my own makeup. I never thought about doing makeup as a career. I actually went to college studying to become a dental hygienist. While in my studies, I fell back in love with makeup. My first makeup gig was for my best friend’s fashion show, she insisted that I do the makeup for all the girls. Using whatever makeup I had at the time, I made it work and from there, I knew this was for me. I practiced dentistry for seven years while doing makeup on the side. Taking clients whenever I can. I can say my makeup career blossomed over the years. January 2022, I put my dentistry license on pause to fully focus on my makeup career. I moved out of my home town Brooklyn, NY and relocated to Los Angeles. I am here to pursue my passion as a makeup artist and to truly serve my purpose.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a makeup artist comes with its pros and cons. I struggled in the beginning like any other creative to get clients to trust my work. I even struggled with being confident in my own work. My biggest challenge was trying to balance my 9-5 job and doing freelance makeup. As a freelancer, you’re basically on call for any opportunity, so working a 9-5 doesn’t permit you to say yes to a lot of offers. Because of that, I missed out on a few gigs. I think one of the toughest aspects of being a makeup artist especially freelance is having a schedule that’s up and down. You’re either on the go with no days off, or you have days where you’re doing absolutely nothing. It comes with the entrepreneur lifestyle.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a self-taught makeup artist. I do more of your everyday clientele but I wouldn’t say I have a speciality when it comes to makeup. I like to dabble in every style of makeup to challenge myself. I am proud of my ambition, my strength, and dedication. But what I am most proud of is my ability to face my fears. Moving to Los Angeles to pursue my career as a makeup artist was a huge step of faith and it is my most proud moment.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe what sets me apart from most is that I create an energy where my clients are able to be their true selves around me. Although I’m an introvert, I love to connect with my clients through literally anything, whether it’s vibing to music, having intimate conversations, or just plain ol’ laughter.
