Conversations with Jeremy Bishop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Bishop

Hi Jeremy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I first got started in photography through surfing with my friends in Southern California. I loved surfing, bodyboarding, and swimming with the camera all throughout college because all my friends surfed. I specifically first got jumped into photography through the Gopro. This was back when they released the Gopro hero 2. I would swim out in the lineup and capture video and photos of my buddies surfing. During this time I would post my surf and water photography from my Gopro to Unsplash.com, and they received a lot of views and downloads. I soon realized that people really liked my work and that I was good at it. This led me to pursue photography as I travelled the world after college. During this time I slowly upgraded my gear during trips and work to shoot specific things I was interested in. I even worked at a cannery in Alaska for two consecutive years just to jump start my funds and pay for camera gear.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I first chuckled after reading this question…I think with every artist in the creative industry it is never a smooth road. It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road for me. For such a competitive industry with no clear roads paved out, it is a battle. Every artist’s path and business plan is different so there is no cooky cutter way to go about things. It is a brutal road sometimes of paving your own way, making mistakes, finding jobs, and going through rough years. One of the main struggles for me has been learning how to run the business side of my photography. I love the creative side and working on my art, but I’ve had to learn the business of photography and how to set yourself up for success.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a commercial and lifestyle photographer specializing in adventure photography. My main thing is introducing brands to wild places. I also specialize in water photography, from surf to underwater photography. I most proud of my water photography and the joy that it brings. I am always planning more trips and jobs around the ocean. The main thing that I would say sets me apart is the movement and action I seek to capture in most of my images.

How do you think about happiness?
Over the years I come to realize that living by the ocean makes me happy. Another huge thing for me is a great community of friends. It can make even the worst location a good time. Who you surround yourselves with is very important in life.
