Conversations with Jenni Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenni Johnson.

Hi Jenni, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m twenty-six. I grew up in east Texas and now live in east LA with my coonhound, Copper. I have a background in theology and filmmaking. I draw on an array of disciplines — from psychology to spirituality, the arts and mental health — to help people enter into conversation with God, others and the story of their own lives.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Challenges I have faced include dropping out of grad school to pursue freelance writing and creating, pivoting from the film entertainment industry to the content and creative writing world, physical location changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic… I could go on! But I believe struggles are not in vain if they teach us something about ourselves or the world around us.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I claim myself a freedomist. With a B.A. in Media and background in religious studies, my work explores contemplative hope through experience and shared wisdom. My voice can be found in blogs, TikTok videos and photo content that leverages collective storytelling to facilitating conversation. My aim here is to share narratives that make us all feel a little less alone.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I grew up in a small town east of Dallas. The community was not tremendously fostering of the arts or the artists in it, but I am lucky to have found solace in the local theatre and its thespians. I loved dancing. I loved Lizzie McGuire and reading and journaling and drawing. I loved creating plays and videos with friends from the time I can remember knowing how to coordinate. Not much has changed.
